Rushalan Ethnicity in Thelekar | World Anvil

Rushalan

An Ancient Rivalry

Tysha is one of the oldest kingdoms in Thelekar, able to trace its history back to some time during the Dratarian Age. Some doctrine of the Church of Hope indicate that both the kingdom and its main faith existed prior to Khoran's birth, potentially placing them at the forefront of human civilization on Arith, predating the earliest known existence of the Aristean or Imperial lines. Though this bloodline has spread out across the continent over the millennia, two distinct ethnic groups have remained behind in the King's Valley: Rushalans and Véritians.   Both Rushalans and Véritians maintain that their respective cultures were the first to take root in Tysha and were the source of its growth, while also accusing the other of being envious invaders who simply wanted to expand their power. While a majority of the Order lacks any sort of major ethnic rivalry due to its formation, Tysha has remained a steadfast beacon of both the positive and negative traits eastern humans adopted over the past centuries. Entire towns have been declared for either side of the rivalry, with Véritian and Rushalan citizens driving each other out of ancient homes in the name of an amorphous pride that may not truly exist. While some use the distinct languages spoken by each group as proof of their different origins, many just assume that a schism formed amongst Tyshan culture millennia ago and the reason has been lost to time, leaving two sides of the same half fighting each other like enemies.

Apostates

Rushalans have never assimilated with Véritian culture and beliefs, unlike a majority of those who migrate into the frozen kingdom of Tysha. Their culture and beliefs are seen as archaic to outsiders, veering into something akin to devil worship or blood magic. Though they recognize the power of the gods both Young and Old, they instead often commune with entities known as Elder Gods- powerful beings that are not as powerful as gods, but powerful enough for civilizations to form around their worship. And yet, even with the Elders they do not seem to worship them. Instead, it is almost as if they have formed a partnership with a number of entities throughout Arith that would otherwise be hunted down and slain by aspiring adventuring parties hoping to live up to the examples of groups like The Wolven Storm or The Chain. Its these relations with extra-planar entities that is often used to explain Rushalan's odd appearance or abilities.

Alien Appearance

Rushalans are very recognizable and distinct from the rest of their human cousins. Similar to the Agdanes, Rushalans have pale white skin and light hair, though both of these traits are taken to the extreme. Their skin is nearly snow white, and their hair a shade of grey rather than taking on the browns and blondes and reds of Véritians. Its almost like a society of monochromatic people- except for their eyes. At some point in the distant past, the Rushalans developed a strange mutation in their eyes allowing the most vibrant colors imaginable to form in their pupils. Reds and whites and yellows and purples, often so unusual that most assume it to be a trick of magic.
