Agdane

In the furthest reaches of Arith lies a frozen wasteland only known as the Frigid North. Rivers of frigid water rush across vast valleys carved by glaciers, creating pathways through an immense, unconquerable mountain range. The weather becomes so treacherous it has yet to be fully explored, and most of the coastline past a certain point is so hazardous to navigate it has remained unmapped. This region has become known as Agder, after the humans who live there: Agdanes.

The "Kingdom" of Agder

Agder is not exactly a kingdom, like many southern nations consider it to be. In reality, every city has its own leader, a Jarl who governs his territory and raises fyrds against his neighbors. Every twenty years, the High Jarl of Svell, the most southern city of the region, will call together the rest of the Jarls and make plans for what amounts to Agder's foreign policy until their next meeting. This is done in the Unity Hall, a fortified castle at the center of the city that houses every foreign Jarl while they remain in the city. For an undecided period of time, a few years at most, Agder unites to either accomplish great construction projects, claim large caches of resources for disbursement throughout the north, or build ships and begin raids of the southern kingdoms. While these raids are damaging, the victims rarely retaliate with an offensive of their own as they are given plenty of time to prepare their defense, and retaliation may prove to keep the north united for longer than a year. The only thing standing in the way of Agder invading the south is Agder itself, given its fractured and divided state. Every Jarl has a feud with at least three other Jarls, preventing them from ever agreeing upon a leader to unite them.   Much in the same way, Agdanes place little trust in large governmental bodies. To those living in Aristean territory, the whole concept of "The Order" is a bit ridiculous. While armies are not raised to siege your neighbors, the vicious trade wars and the machinations of The Great Game are apparent to anyone who grew up in Agder. As a result, they care little for what they consider to be a bloated governmental body with hundreds of laws and taxes and failures. Agdanes, often simply referred to as Northmen, are generally individualistic and are usually only loyal to their close friends or family, or their adventuring party.

Northmen

The Agdanes are born and bred in the Frigid North, and their bodies have come to resemble that fact. Their skin is fair, adapted to preserve their body warmth and resist the biting winds that never cease. Their hair ranges from platinum blonde to bright red, and their eyes generally take up either green or blue hues, with brown being the rare minority, unlike their southern cousins. Their bodies are large and muscular, and they grow beards that could make a dwarf blush. Likewise, Agdane women also grow beards, potentially as a result of intermarrying with the dwarven chapters north of the Girdellan Peaks.
