Edward Pavus
Edward Pavus is most remembered as the Spymaster of the Wardens during the Ferelden Civil War. An unlikely candidate, Edward served as the organization's eyes and ears during their most desperate hours, despite never officially being inducted as a Warden himself.
His tenure was marked by a sharp wit forged in criminal underworlds of Kirkwall and Orlais proved useful, but his legacy remains a tragic one: a bad man seeking redemption only to be consumed by the ghosts of his past.
During this period, Edward's relationship with Bartrand fractured due to subsequent betrayals from both sides. While away from each other, Edward fell in love with a woman named Serena. She became his everything and they married on the condition that he'd leave the criminal life behind. While Serena was pregnant with their first child, Edward's habits got the better of him and resulted in him being on the run from qunari mercenaries. Realizing his presence would only continue to put Serena and his future child at risk, he fled Orlais — cementing one of his most defining regrets.

Personal History
Early Life
Born in Kirkwall, Edward was the younger brother of Bartrand Pavus. Before even his sixth birthday, their parents were murdered by apostates. The two were forced into poverty and lived in the slums of Lowtown, eventually becoming thieves within the Coterie. At fourteen, they snuck out to Val Royeaux on a pilgrimage vessel. They fell in love with the jeweled city, decided to stay, and began transitioning from petty street crime to high-stakes cons within the Grand Game. In their wake, a lot of people got hurt.During this period, Edward's relationship with Bartrand fractured due to subsequent betrayals from both sides. The Ferelden Civil War
In a desperate attempt to mend their bond, Edward and Bartrand reunited to follow a map they won from a Rivaini seaferer. It led them to the arling of South Reach where nearby the path to a lost dwarven thaig began. It was here that fate aligned them with the burgeoning Heroes of Ferelden."I am Madeline Pentaghast, Seeker of Truth. I know who you are... what you've done."

Fresh off the massacre that was the Battle of Dur Themriel, the sole remaining Warden and his acquaintances entered into South Reach looking for a place for the refugees from the small southern town of Rootstart to stay. One of Rootstart's denizens, a man named Arthur, learned that his missing wife had made her way to the city, too. The trail led this crowd to the Arl and the Pavus brothers, the two of them had found her fleeing the conflict alone out in the forests. Leveraging this moral debt, Edward secured the future-Wardens' assistance for an expedition into the Deep Roads.
Life had other plans for him, however. When he eventually found where his brother had run off to, he couldn't help himself from wanting revenge. Edward and his allies tracked Bartrand down and found him in a red-lyrium induced state of madness. In a moment of grief and fury that he'd come to regret, Edward murdered his brother. Only a few months later, during a trip to Orlais, he also found confirmation that his own previous criminal dealings had indirectly caused the deaths of his estranged wife, Serena, and their child.
The Deep Roads Expedition
The three-week trek proved nightmarish, start to finish. While the group successfully located the lost thaig, Bartrand ended up stealing a mysterious idol made of red lyrium and abandoned the rest of the group in the thaig. Following their escape, Edward remained with the Wardens. They traveled to Gwaren and later the edges of the Brecilian Forest. During this time, he found an elf that could perform a ritual to cure Commander Flume of the red lyrium addiction he had developed while in the dwarven thaig, marking his first significant step away from self-interest.Tragedy
After the difficulties he and his new allies faced, he began wanting to turn his life around. He sought mentorship and guidance from Valdris Kai'teih as well as Denerim's then-Revered Mother Elthina. Importantly, Valdris allowed Edward to confide his guilt and pain over how he always ended up hurting people close to him. Valdris and the Revered Mother drove Edward to want to atone for his past sins, and he began charting a life into the light.Life had other plans for him, however. Departure from the Wardens
The death of his closest friend during the final battle against the Old God Urthemriel served as the final breaking point. Sunk into a deep depression and convinced that he brought only ruin to those he loved, Edward resigned from his position as Spymaster. He departed Ferelden in shame, leaving with Reavass to seek an audience with the Divine. His whereabouts remain unknown.Personality & Mental Characteristics
Edward was a master of deflection, using a carefully maintained facade of humor and sarcasm to shield an inner world of emotion he never learned to navigate. His upbringing taught him to value personal freedom above all else, leading to a "live in the present" philosophy that allowed him to outrun consequences for decades. It was only during his time with the Wardens that his guard truly dropped, allowing him to form the first genuine bonds of his adult life."I am Madeline Pentaghast, Seeker of Truth. However, the weight of his failures eventually proved too heavy to bear. The realization that he his actions led to the deaths of his brother, his wife, and his child he never met transformed him. This struggle led him to depression and to attempt suicide, fortunately failing due to a last-second intervention by Valdris. When Valdris died in battle shortly thereafter, Edward became hardened: pragmatic, ruthless, and cold.
