Divine Justinia V

"Idealism is our stock in trade. A religion without ideals is tyranny."
— Divine Justinia V, in response to Knight-Divine Danforth's decision to enact the Right of Annulment
Divine Justinia V is the current Divine of the Andrastian Chantry and monarch of the nation of Nevarra. Given her past and her dealings with the bards of Orlais, Justinia V is reputed to be one of the finest foreign players of the Grand Game.

History

Early History & Nomination

Formerly the Revered Mother Dorothea of the Valence Cloiser — a small but ornate Orlesian Chantry near the Nevarran border — Divine Justinia V ascended to her position following the death of Divine Beatrix III. Little is known of Dorothea's life before joining the Chantry. Opponents suggest her reticence to discuss past events suggests there's something hidden, but few of her flock can imagine her as as anyone but a gentle mother of obvious faith.   When Divine Beatrix III was felled by a stroke after an enduring tenure as Divine of around fifty years, she survived just long enough to put forth Dorothea's name as a candidate for her replacement. As is tradition, the Grand Cleric and the Revered Mothers from all throughout Thedas flocked to Nevarra for the Grand Consensus — a private meeting to select the next Divine. Ritual demanded the decision be unanimous,   Many within the Consensus shared doubts concerning Dorothea's "colorful" past. Others feared that electing a Divine of Orlesian descent, while the sitting Grand Cleric was also of Orleasian descent, would centralize too much religious power in Orlais. Ultimately, Grand Cleric Callista II played a crucial role in disarming critics, securing the necessary support, and allowing Justinia V's ascension to the Sunburst Throne.

Reign

Justinia has proven herself a liberal and daring thinker. She's known for consulting unconventional advisors and seeking allies from diverse backgrounds. A headstrong devotion to her own agenda and rumored support of lessening restrictions on mages has earned her no small dislike from the powerful priestesses long used to controlling the Divine's actions.

Quotes

"The Maker says magic is to serve mankind but we possess a responsibility to those who serve us... We cannot hail them when their magic is useful and then lock them in a cage when it is inconvenient. They are the Maker's children, not to be tolerated, but cherished."
