Sorcerer

Golden eyes flashing, a human stretches out her hand and unleashes the dragonfire that burns in her veins. As an inferno rages around her foes, leathery wings spread from her back and she takes to the air.   Long hair whipped by a conjured wind, a half-elf spreads his arms wide and throws his head back. Lifting him momentarily off the ground, a wave of magic surges up in him, through him, and out from him in a mighty blast of lightning.   Crouching behind a stalagmite, a halfling points a finger at a charging troglodyte. A blast of fire springs from her finger to strike the creature. She ducks back behind the rock formation with a grin, unaware that her wild magic has turned her skin bright blue.   Sorcerers carry a magical birthright conferred upon them by an exotic bloodline, some otherworldly influence, or exposure to unknown cosmic forces. One can’t study sorcery as one learns a language, any more than one can learn to live a legendary life. No one chooses sorcery; the power chooses the sorcerer.

Raw Magic

Magic is a part of every sorcerer, suffusing body, mind, and spirit with a latent power that waits to be tapped. Some sorcerers wield magic that springs from an ancient bloodline infused with the magic of dragons. Others carry a raw, uncontrolled magic within them, a chaotic storm that manifests in unexpected ways.   The appearance of sorcerous powers is wildly unpredictable. Some draconic bloodlines produce exactly one sorcerer in every generation, but in other lines of descent every individual is a sorcerer. Most of the time, the talents of sorcery appear as apparent flukes. Some sorcerers can’t name the origin of their power, while others trace it to strange events in their own lives. The touch of a demon, the blessing of a dryad at a baby’s birth, or a taste of the water from a mysterious spring might spark the gift of sorcery. So too might the gift of a deity of magic, exposure to the elemental forces of the Inner Planes or the maddening chaos of Limbo, or a glimpse into the inner workings of reality.   Sorcerers have no use for the spellbooks and ancient tomes of magic lore that wizards rely on, nor do they rely on a patron to grant their spells as warlocks do. By learning to harness and channel their own inborn magic, they can discover new and staggering ways to unleash that power.

Unexplained Powers

Sorcerers are rare in the world, and it’s unusual to find a sorcerer who is not involved in the adventuring life in some way. People with magical power seething in their veins soon discover that the power doesn’t like to stay quiet. A sorcerer’s magic wants to be wielded, and it has a tendency to spill out in unpredictable ways if it isn’t called on.   Sorcerers often have obscure or quixotic motivations driving them to adventure. Some seek a greater understanding of the magical force that infuses them, or the answer to the mystery of its origin. Others hope to find a way to get rid of it, or to unleash its full potential. Whatever their goals, sorcerers are every bit as useful to an adventuring party as wizards, making up for a comparative lack of breadth in their magical knowledge with enormous flexibility in using the spells they know.

Creating a Sorcerer

The most important question to consider when creating your sorcerer is the origin of your power. As a starting character, you’ll choose an origin that ties to a draconic bloodline or the influence of wild magic, but the exact source of your power is up to you to decide. Is it a family curse, passed down to you from distant ancestors? Or did some extraordinary event leave you blessed with inherent magic but perhaps scarred as well?   How do you feel about the magical power coursing through you? Do you embrace it, try to master it, or revel in its unpredictable nature? Is it a blessing or a curse? Did you seek it out, or did it find you? Did you have the option to refuse it, and do you wish you had? What do you intend to do with it? Perhaps you feel like you’ve been given this power for some lofty purpose. Or you might decide that the power gives you the right to do what you want, to take what you want from those who lack such power. Perhaps your power links you to a powerful individual in the world—the fey creature that blessed you at birth, the dragon who put a drop of its blood into your veins, the lich who created you as an experiment, or the deity who chose you to carry this power.

Quick Build

You can make a sorcerer quickly by following these suggestions. First, Charisma should be your highest ability score, followed by Constitution. Second, choose the hermit background. Third, choose the light, prestidigitation, ray of frost, and shocking grasp cantrips, along with the 1st-level spells shield and magic missile.

Font of Magic

At 2nd level, you tap into a deep wellspring of magic within yourself. This wellspring is represented by sorcery points, which allow you to create a variety of magical effects.   Sorcery Points. You have 2 sorcery points, and you gain more as you reach higher levels, as shown in the Sorcery Points column of the Sorcerer table. You can never have more sorcery points than shown on the table for your level. You regain all spent sorcery points when you finish a long rest.   Flexible Casting. You can use your sorcery points to gain additional spell slots, or sacrifice spell slots to gain additional sorcery points. You learn other ways to use your sorcery points as you reach higher levels.   Creating Spell Slots. You can transform unexpended sorcery points into one spell slot as a bonus action on your turn. The Creating Spell Slots table shows the cost of creating a spell slot of a given level. You can create spell slots no higher in level than 5th.   Any spell slot you create with this feature vanishes when you finish a long rest.   Converting a Spell Slot to Sorcery Points. As a bonus action on your turn, you can expend one spell slot and gain a number of sorcery points equal to the slot’s level.

Metamagic

At 3rd level, you gain the ability to twist your spells to suit your needs. You gain two of the following Meta Magic options of your choice. You gain another one at 10th and 17th level.   You can use only one Metamagic option on a spell when you cast it, unless otherwise noted.

Ability Score Improvement

At 4th level, and again at 8th, 12th, 16th, and 19th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or increase two ability scores by 1 each. As usual, you cannot increase an ability score above 20 using this ability.   Alternatively, you can choose to gain a single feat of your choice

Sorcerous Restoration

At 20th level, you regain 4 expended sorcery points whenever you finish a short rest.

Starting Equipment

  • (a) a light crossbow and 20 bolts or (b) any simple weapon
  • (a) a component pouch or (b) an arcane focus
  • (a) a dungeoneer’s pack or (b) an explorer’s pack
  • Two daggers

Spellcasting

Cantrips At 1st level, you know four cantrips of your choice from the sorcerer spell list. You learn additional sorcerer cantrips of your choice at higher levels, as shown in the Cantrips Known column of the Sorcerer table.   Spell Slots The Sorcerer table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your sorcerer spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these sorcerer spells, you must expend a slot of the spell’s level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest.   For example, if you know the 1st-level spell burning hands and have a 1st-level and a 2nd-level spell slot available, you can cast burning hands using either slot.   Spells Known of 1st Level and Higher You know two 1st-level spells of your choice from the sorcerer spell list.   The Spells Known column of the Sorcerer table shows when you learn more sorcerer spells of your choice. Each of these spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots. For instance, when you reach 3rd level in this class, you can learn one new spell of 1st or 2nd level.   Additionally, when you gain a level in this class, you can choose one of the sorcerer spells you know and replace it with another spell from the sorcerer spell list, which also must be of a level for which you have spell slots.   Spellcasting Ability Charisma is your spellcasting ability for your sorcerer spells, since the power of your magic relies on your ability to project your will into the world. You use your Charisma whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your Charisma modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a sorcerer spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one.   Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier   Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier   Spellcasting Focus You can use an arcane focus (see the Adventuring Gear section) as a spellcasting focus for your sorcerer spells.

Subclass Options

Sorcerous Origins

Different sorcerers claim different origins for their innate magic. These origins can vary greatly, from Draconic Bloodlines, to Blighted, to a Divine Soul, and some sources even more ancient and powerful

Acheron Ancestry

Your magic stems from the plane of Acheron, the Infernal Battlefield. Unending battles take place across the entire plane between huge armies, with no chance of victory or cease-fire. This magic allows you to declare dominion over your foes, using both blade and spell to tear apart the battlefield. No matter how you gained your magic, you can use it bolster your martial prowess

Ancestral Weapon

Your innate magic remained dormant until the first time you picked up the legendary weapon of your bloodline. Ancestral weapons derive their power from many sources. Some weapons are blessed by a god or powerful being. Others are forged with magic within them and bound to the family’s blood. Some are even said to hold fragments of the previous wielders’ souls within them. Ancestral weapons are sometimes sentient, or able to communicate with the wielder, but this is not always so. When an ancestral weapon is held by one with the blood of lineage, they are granted both martial prowess and the magical ability of their ancestors.

Anti-Magic Void

The world is filled with magic, it crawls through everything from the trees to the clouds to the people walking around. It’s what lets necromancy manipulate death, it’s what lets transmutation change inanimate objects. Magic is within everything, except for you. In your past something happened, perhaps you were born in a manifest zone of the far realms, perhaps you were struck by a violent magical attack that sapped your inner magic, perhaps your ancestors angered a god and were robbed of their essence. Whatever it was, you became a black hole of magic, and like a black hole you drag magic into yourself to fill this void. You’ve learned to use this to your benefit, taking the magic you draw in and giving it form.

Arachnid Magic

To many, even the sight of spiders can instill fear into the hearts of others. However, you have learned to not only to instill this fear, but also to use the power of spiders as well. You are a sorcerer who has mastered the might and abilities of spiders, manipulating other creatures and web alike.   Perhaps you were bitten by a magical spider, or your birth was affected by magical abilites from Lolth. Whatever the case may be, you are a frightening and powerfully skilled sorcerer.

Arcanasylph

Sorcerers who reject the wild and chaotic power in their blood can tame their inner arcana, compelling it into stable structures through complex glyphs and sigils, and what might be lost in sacrificing the natural expression of their power is gained in skill, control, and masterful precision. Few sorcerers choose this path, instead embracing the magic inherent to their blood and soul. Those that do always have good reason. You might have suppressed your former origin after accidentally losing control and harming a loved one, or perhaps it was done to you against your will to limit and focus your power, or to keep the true nature of your sorcerous origin a secret.

Arcane Anomaly

Your ancestors dabbled in magic they should not have, and encountered a magical anomaly of dreadful power. Their mistake has tainted your bloodline with sinister potential, and the natural forces of the world reject your presence with extreme prejudice, recognising the danger of the magic coursing through you as a thread to the very fabric of what is.

Arcane Descendant

You are the descendant of wizard of great renown, a specialist in one of the eight schools of magic, whose mastery was so complete that their lineage was marked by magic. Whether this ancestor was many generations past, or your own parent, their arcane mastery has again manifested in you, giving you an innate access to magic that others would have to study and learn. You have a particular affinity to your ancestor's favorite school of magic, able to wield it to great effect.

Ashen Lineage

Somewhere in your bloodline, one of your ancestors made a pact with a powerful spirit of flame and predation known as the Ashen Wolf. This elemental creature is neither fiend nor fey, but something primal and otherworldly. It is honored with ritualistic immolation and sacrifices of meat and metal. While the Wolf may have no hold over you, it may be interested in your affairs nevertheless, and your very existence could draw the ire of the Wolf’s eternal foe: the frost-bound Wild Huntsman. With smoke and cinders pouring from your hands with each spell you cast and a layer of ash gradually creeping over your body, you are the incarnation of a smoldering ember thrown upon a dry forest. Let your power burn forth like wildfire.

Blackthorn Lineage

Somewhere in your lineage, an ancestor entered and made a pact with the Blackthorn Grove, replacing their heart with one crafted from the essence of the Grove itself. Working with plants has always come naturally to you, but one day your magical power awakened. In defense of your life or in pursuit of your heart’s deepest desires, the strange arcana of the Blackthorn Grove sprouted within your veins, giving you power to use as you see fit.

Blighted

Your innate magic stems from the corrupting power of a Gulthias tree. Most with this origin can trace their magic back to a near-death experience caused by a blighted creature, or through extended exposure to blighted land and plant life. Attempting to consume blighted plants over a period of a few weeks or months can often lead to this magic becoming imbued into a creature’s system, assuming it doesn’t kill them first. Whatever the cause, blight magic allows you to animate blighted creatures to do your bidding, as if you were a living Gulthias tree.

Bone Magic

You are a creature of bizarre origin, the magic that flows through you affecting your very bones to be the catalyst for your magical abilities. Your powers might be traced back to your ancestors, or perhaps you were the subject of vile experiments.   While acceptance of mages and wizards wielding flame, ice, or lightning is generally greeted warmly, you might not be. The use of your very bones for magic has taken a toll on your body's outward appearance, scarring your skin. Some might see you as a tool to be used for power, while others might shy away from the very sight of you. At your option, you can pick from or roll on the Bone Sorcerer Quirks table to create a quick quirk for your character.

Crystalline Being

There exist those sorcerers who maintain power from the very earth beneath them, bending metal or stone to their will. However, there is an even more rare type of earth magic that revolves around the manipulation and use of crystals. Crystals are used in various methods throughout the world, from such properties as healing, elecricity, ice, or divining.   Perhaps you came in contact with a crystal filled with volatile magic, or you were born underground, surrounded by a crystal vein that lies dormant in the earth. Whatever the reason, your power over earth and crystal is a rare and incredible form of magic.

Death Sorcery

Many mages lay claim to the mantle of necromancer, but only few are true disciples of demise. Your magic comes from a deep connection to death, and therefore its connection to you. Perhaps you were lost to the Shadowfell for a time, or your bloodline is tainted by the curse of vampirism. Many death sorcerers instead foster a bond with the grave as a result of ending up in an early one. Dragged kicking and screaming back to the land of the living--or unliving in your case--by their own supernatural gifts, they find that even returned they aren't quite all they once were.

Deathtouched

Your innate magic comes from a past encounter with death. Most often, this origin is traced back to surviving an attack from an undead, such as a vampire’s bite, a ghost’s possession, or a specter’s life drain. Or, it could have originated from an imperfect revival or near-death experience. Regardless of the way you attained this dark magic, it now dictates your life and greatly augments your power.

Deep Earth

Beneath the surface of the ground, there exist those who have command over stone and rock, moving within the very earth itself. These beings have incredible powers, and are often revered for their constructive abilities as they are equally feared for their potential for utter destruction. Perhaps you were born underground or at the base of a mountain, or came in contact with an immense being that lurks in the darkness of the deep earth. However you came into your power, you are an entity of the raw power of earth and stone, and as such are one of incredible earthen strength.

Divine Soul

Sometimes the spark of magic that fuels a sorcerer comes from a divine source that glimmers within the soul. Having such a blessed soul is a sign that your innate magic might come from a distant but powerful familial connection to a divine being. Perhaps your ancestor was an angel, transformed into a mortal and sent to fight in a god’s name. Or your birth might align with an ancient prophecy, marking you as a servant of the gods or a chosen vessel of divine magic. A Divine Soul, with a natural magnetism, is seen as a threat by some religious hierarchies. As an outsider who commands sacred power, a Divine Soul can undermine an existing order by claiming a direct tie to the divine.   In some cultures, only those who can claim the power of a Divine Soul may command religious power. In these lands, ecclesiastical positions are dominated by a few bloodlines and preserved over generations.

Draconic Bloodline

Your innate magic comes from draconic magic that was mingled with your blood or that of your ancestors. Most often, sorcerers with this origin trace their descent back to a mighty sorcerer of ancient times who made a bargain with a dragon or who might even have claimed a dragon parent. Some of these bloodlines are well established in the world, but most are obscure. Any given sorcerer could be the first of a new bloodline, as a result of a pact or some other exceptional circumstance.

Drowned

You drowned. Perhaps you were a sailor and you fell overboard into the unforgiving sea. Maybe your baptism went horribly wrong. Regardless, you should have died there in the water, but instead it awoke some latent magic that saved your life.

Dune Child

To many, sands of the earth or deserts are viewed as a nuisance; it is coarse, rough, and irritating, and it gets everywhere. However you have a unique and immense power over sand, and are a perfect being for surviving the trials and mirages of the desert. Perhaps you were born amongst the dunes of an ancient desert, the magic of the sands having spoken to you. Or, you came into contact with a mirage, peculiar plant, or ancient ruin within a desert, and your magic awoke from the interaction you had with it. However your powers emerged for you, you are a valuable traveling companion and a spirit of the very desert itself.

Etched Soul

Your innate magic comes from a powerful text or source of knowledge. Your lineage likely traces to an ancestor who encountered some forbidden truth or celestial insight which scarred your bloodline with magic.

Evil Star

You were born under an evil star. That’s what people told you, even as they crossed to other side of the street and made a sign against bad magic. Your blood carries the blighted power of the far off stars, cold and burning, deathly givers of life.

Explosive Mage

Your innate magic stems from a the powerful forces of explosives and explosions. Through some bizarre event, you have gained an ability to harness effects that burn and push others away, and devastate both flesh and stone alike. You might have survived a terrible detonation, being the sole living being in the aftermath. Or, perhaps you were created by a mighty alchemist in an attempt to create the perfect weapon. Whatever the case may be, you are an incredible power and strength.

Flametouched

Your magic stems from the primordial energy of elemental fire. Many sorcerers with this power can trace their ancestry to the creatures of the Plane of Elemental fire, particularly the Efreeti. This origin is not always ancestral, however. Your powers might have manifested after a near-death experience with a creature of fire, like the legendary phoenix, or simply through constant exposure to fire. In rare cases, those that live near volcanoes can spontaneously gain these powers, especially if they’ve lived near one since childhood. Regardless of how this magic manifested, it causes flames to permeate your soul and define your magic.

Flower Child

The season of spring is a time of rebirth, renewal, and revitalizing growth, as animals awaken from hibernation, flowers begin to bloom, and the land returns from the dreary blanket of winter to the welcoming warmth of blue skies and vibrant green growth.   You are a sorcerer of this powerful energy, and manifest it in the form of one spring's most signature features: blooming flowers. Perhaps you were born on the first day of spring, or are the descendent of a powerful dryad or a deity of nature. You may even have come from a bloodline of powerful druids, or had your powers awakened by a magical flower. Whatever the case may be, you are a sorcerer of joy and vibrance, but a powerful one still.

Fungal Sorcery

The magics that exist within the Underdark and some dark forests of the world can sometimes alter the natural terrain and plant life that dwells within them. Your magic stems from the magical abilities of the fungi and mushrooms that live in the deep caverns of the Underdark, or the dim lower levels of ancient forests.   Perhaps you lived amongst these plants for years, and their magic rubbed off on you. Some sorcerers of this origin may have had some interaction with myconids, who granted them certain magical powers, or perhaps there is some myconid blood in your family. Either way, those sorcerers who have command over the fungi of the world have a deep respect for nature and the processes of decay and rebirth through nature.

Gravitational Origin

Some are born with innate power of forces of gravity. This could be due to the location of birth, being in contact with powerful gravitational waves, or other powerful force of nature. Whatever the case, sorcerers of this origin inherently command the force of gravity and bend it to their will

Haunted

The Haunted live a cursed existence, often unaware of what lurks beneath their skin. Spirits, ghosts, undead, poltergeists; All names for beings that cling to the flame of youth and manage to find their way into the body, embeding themselves in the blood, mind and soul of the host. They attempt to communicate with the host in playful visions, that many hosts don't find nearly as charming. If you are playing a version of sorcerer that has bonus spells, May I suggest these?

Heroic Ancestry

Your innate magic comes from your connection to an ancient hero—an ancestor of yours that defeated mighty foes and reached the peak of physical ability. In the years beyond their death, your ancestor’s deeds have been immortalized by history, and their bloodline has been blessed by the gods. Through your blessed blood, you can channel the abilities of your ancestor, mimicking their unmatched strength and prowess. Most of these bloodlines are well-established, and deeply connected to royal or noble blood. Some of these bloodlines have been obscured by time, however, and many sorcerers of this origin have no know- ledge of their history. Not all members of a heroic bloodline awaken this magic, so it can remain hidden for generations and slowly forgotten before suddenly re-emerging.

Imperial Birthright

There is power in king’s blood. Your innate magic comes from your royal ancestry. Whether you are a far flung cousin of a great house, the child of a deposed prince, a secret bastard denied legitimacy, or the rightful heir to a kingdom, your bloodline is that of kings and emperors. You might be unaware of your lineage and of the source of your power, or perhaps you have always known yourself to be the true inheritor of a throne now held by usurpers.

Insect Being

The insects and bugs that inhabit the world are often small in size, though they possess incredible strength and a vast understanding of working together. You are a sorcerer who makes use of the might of insects, and thus are able to command them and change parts of your body to adapt like they can. Perhaps you grew up amongst powerful insects, and their magic altered you, or you come from a powerful bloodline of magical users who commanded control over the bugs of the world. However you came to these abilities, you are a commendable ally and a powerful sorcerer.

Iron Core Sorcery

This bloodline originates from a subset of elemental earth refined by millenia of industry. Some have an ancestor who survived immersion in molten adamantine, and others lived for generations in mining towns surrounded by veins of ore. Regardless of source, each Iron Core harbors a kernel of magical metal which manifests their magic as metallic power

Ironmonger Bloodline

Your innate magic is, like many sorcerers, a result of your bloodline. But for you, this is a deeper connection than even other sorcerers can claim. The power in your veins is a result of your ancestors use of rare and magical metals, metals that bent blood with its presence, and slowly became a part of them. Its existence has given those who possess it the ability to channel the weave's magic, as well as to control their own blood—and the blood of others—with a supernatural prowess. Your powers are violent, visceral, and more than capable of rending flesh as easily as it gives life to your own. It's with these abilities that you shape your world, as red stained as it might be.

Luminous Sorcery

Your magic stems from a deep connection to the blessed light of the upper planes, which you channel into bolts of radiant light. While more powerful beings might be able to simply hurl these bolts, you instead fire them from ranged weapons, hindering your foes from afar. Perhaps you gained this magic from a brief encounter with a Solar and their mighty bow, or you channel the plane of Arborea, and your skill with the a bow and arrow reflects the elves that reside there.

Mirrorborn

You were born backwards. No-one can really explain it, but everything seems -wrong- to you. Like you were born on the other side of the looking glass, and you aren’t able to go back. This strange relationship with the material plane grants you magic, that manifest in a number of peculiar ways

Moontouched

To many, the moon is an important aspect of both nature and culture: it helps keep track of the passage of time, represents the feminine side of nature, and effects the tides of the ocean. It also is a symbol for the night, and holds strong connections to lycanthropy and, as some claim, even lunacy.   You are a sorcerer who derives their power from the moon and its cycles. Perhaps you were born during a full or new moon, or even during an eclipse, perhaps even planned by your family or village in an attempt to bring forth someone who can help against a tide of lycanthropes. Or, you may have had an experience under the light of the moon that changed your life forever. Whatever the case, you have magical abilities drawn from the moon, and are a beacon in the night.

Oracle

You have been vested with cosmic forces of fate and destiny, able to catch glimpses of the future and past. This might be the act of the divine, the result of a previous prophecy, or perhaps merely the result of a fateful coincidence. A force such as fate is hard to contain, and manifests in you in not only powers of foretelling, but also in arcane spells and a slow-building understanding of the true nature of time.

Pandemonic Sorcery

Your innate powers come from the insane, chaotic energies of Pandemonium, its magic giving you dominion over mind and madness. You may trace your lineage back to one of the few people who escaped its clutches, possibly someone who went mad from the constant, screaming winds. Perhaps you yourself endured the winds for a brief time, blowing in from a planar portal or somewhere planar boundaries are thin. Whatever the reason, the magic of Pandemonium is yours to command - though its energies can still affect your mind, making you question your reality and sanity. At your option, you can pick from or roll on the Pandemonic Influence table to create an effect for your character.

Paper Magic

The ability to hold magical powers over texts, tomes, and paper is an incredibly rare yet powerful one. It could be that your family maintained a vast and legendary library for wizards of a grand university or arcane school, or that you once found a lost and forgotten book and were exposed to the unknown magics that had filled its pages. However you came into this power, you are a rare yet extraordinarily gifted sorcerer of a power very few could hold a candle to.

Phoenix Soul

Your power draws from the immortal flame of the legendary phoenix. That power is a mixed blessing. Like the mythical creature, you can invoke fiery energy and gain the ability to cheat death itself. This power comes at a cost. The fire within you seethes, demanding to be unleashed. Fire is a dangerous force, and phoenix sorcerers have a reputation (deserved or not) for reckless behavior, confident that the essence of the phoenix can save them.

Plaguebringer

Sometimes the magic that empowers a sorcerer comes from a source that would normally harm both nature and civilizations, though not necessarily be evil in and of itself. Plagues are one such thing as this, and you are a sorcerer who draws their power from the diseases and illnesses that fly on the winds of plagues. Perhaps you were changed by the effects of a plague, or were one of the only survivors of a deady disease that devastated your homeland. However you came to these powers, you are a harbinger of the plague.

Primal Fury

The rare few that manifest sorcerous power through Primal Fury are a confusing wonder to scholars, wizards, other sorcerers, and even themselves. Their power, it is said, comes from a connection to the primal passion of magic, but any attempts to study or even ask a Primal Fury sorcerer have been met with failure. These "rage mages," as they have been called, don't care about the how or why; they only care about the results.   Indeed, a rage mage's spells seem to stem from a simple desire for a particular outcome. The sorcerer taps into the essence of magic and channels it through raw unbridled emotion and fury, which always has the outcome that the sorcerer wants, though the exact process might not match expectations. But again, rage mages don't care about the how, just about the outcome.

Primal Hunter

Your innate magic stems from the power that resides within the roaming beasts of the land, the natural hunters and strong predators. Sorcerers of this origin can sometimes trace their lineage back to some special encounter with a powerful beast, or an entity from the Beastlands. Others are descended from ancient shifters or lycanthropes, or even powerful predators of the wilds. Fewer still are those who grew up among the animals of a magical place, thus learning to adapt to be like them. Rare, deadly, and more wild than civilized, sorcerers of this origin are some of the greatest hunters and trackers of the world, and wield their magic alongside their animalistic nature.

Residual Magic

Your inherent magic is the lingering aftermath of your powerful wizard ancestors. Years and years of study and manipulation of the weave have eventually led to you, perhaps the first in your family line to be born with innate magical abilities.   The weave around you may have grown more densely knotted before your birth, or maybe your parents completed a special ritual without knowing its prenatal effects. Regardless, you have a knack for the spells your family has explored, your own academic inclinations notwithstanding.

Rift-Borne

Tears in space. Such things are a normality in the Many-Worlds, breaks in the sealed barriers of planes and of realities that are often found; breaches in the fabric of what is known to see unto the unknown. Planar Gateways, short-lived portals from one area to the next. These interdimensional rifts allow those who find and control them passage to other times, other realms, and other realities. Some are born here, near or within these gaps in the static and stationary. Few among those, are born with innate gifts. And further few, even, are those who can harness the innate power of these "rifts" in order to empower and strengthen themselves. These lucky and dangerous few are known simply as Rift-Borne

Sealed Horror

Every day, the world is in danger because of the great monsters people call horrors. Fiends from the deepest hells, alien fey, the spirits of those long gone; the most efficient way people found to prevent these attacks is by sealing these horrors within mortals. You are one such mortal, protecting the world from the evil locked within you.

Seventh Son

They say that the seventh son of a seventh son has incredible magical power. Unfortunately for you, they were absolutely right. Power boils in you and frequently spills over into the world around you. Though this natural power does often manifest in long wizarding families, it is by no means limited to sons, or even seventh sons, striking random families out of nowhere once in a generation and forcing them to wrestle with the responsibilities and privileges of overflowing destructive power.

Shadow Magic

You are a creature of shadow, for your innate magic comes from the Shadowfell itself. You might trace your lineage to an entity from that place, or perhaps you were exposed to its fell energy and transformed by it.   The power of shadow magic casts a strange pall over your physical presence. The spark of life that sustains you is muffled, as if it struggles to remain viable against the dark energy that imbues your soul. At your option, you can pick from or roll on the Shadow Sorcerer Quirks table to create a quirk for your character.

Shattering Glass

You have been imbued with a semblance of an incomprehensible mirror world, dimension, or other reality-bending concepts. It has left you with the ability to see the world for what it really is, fragments of creation, constantly forming, breaking and changing. With this newfound perception you gain the ability to manifest these shattering fragments of reality and causality to aid you, sometimes at the cost of your own durability.

Soulless

You don’t exist. Not really. You were born without a soul, or that’s what they tell you. It makes you special, but you don’t feel any different...not that you have anything to compare it to. People have always treated you differently, as if there were nothing behind your eyes but darkness.

Soul of Iron

Soul of Iron are warforged created with a special crystal heart that grants them innate magical power. This heart cycles arcane energy throughout their body to sustain their magic. It may literally be in place of their heart, hidden somewhere else in their body, or even a prominent feature on their exterior. Soul of iron warforged were designed to be front line mages on the battlefield and intelligent magical workers off the field. Their magic is deeply connected to their crystal core.
Restriction The soul of iron sorcerous origin can only be chosen by warforged due to the inherent connection it has with the race. A DM may choose to lift this restriction if it fits your character and setting.

Spellfire Channeler

Most who bear the gift of spellfire never have time or opportunity to develop those skills, due to destroying themselves early on or forced to live on the run from those who seek to exploit them. You, however, have undertaken careful practice to grow your talents into magical mastery. You know that, in time, those who do practice their spellfire are able to hone their talent into true sorcery and fantastic abilities that most dabblers can only dream of.

Sphinx Soul

Your natural abilities of magic comes from the strength and might of the sphinxes, as they guard and defend ancient temples and sacred sites. You have control over teleportation and the raw strength of the sphinxes, and as such are a powerful site to behold. Perhaps your family's bloodline traces itself back to an ancient priest or mage with great ties to sphinxes, or maybe even sphinxes themselves. Or, it may be the case that your magical talents were born from exposure to the mystical auras of an ancient temple. Whatever the case, you are a powerful sorcerer to behold.

Split Soul

Your innate magic comes from a magical incident that split your soul. While many would die from such an incident, you survived by imprinting your soul fragment on that of a tiny beast nearby, and now the two of you share a rare and powerful bond. For some Split Soul Sorcerers, this bond is a burden exacerbated by a rebellious creature angered by the bond. For others, the familiar becomes a beloved companion without whom, the sorcerer feels incomplete. Regardless of the relationship, Split Soul Sorcerers feel a need to remain nearby their bonded familiars and doing so provides them both unique power.

Star Spawn

Star Spawn sorcerers inherit their magic from the mysterious creatures of the same name from the far reaches. Their magic is one of spatial manipulation and psychic energies, allowing them to move and cast spells in unpredictable and disruptive ways. The birth of a Star Spawn sorcerer occurs in the wake of a comet passing overhead, and forebodes the arrival of Elder Evils.

Star Touched

By either an ancient ritual, or a birthright passed down through generations, you are able to use magic that reflects the power of stars. This magic, both old and powerful, can shape worlds or destroy them, and lets you shine the light from above down onto those who would face you.

Storm Sorcery

Your innate magic comes from the power of elemental air. Many with this power can trace their magic back to a near-death experience caused by the Great Rain, but perhaps you were born during a howling gale so powerful that folk still tell stories of it, or your lineage might include the influence of potent air creatures such as djinn. Whatever the case, the magic of the storm permeates your being.   Storm sorcerers are invaluable members of a ship’s crew. Their magic allows them to exert control over wind and weather in their immediate area. Their abilities also prove useful in repelling attacks by sahuagin, pirates, and other waterborne threats.

Sunblessed

The season of summer is a time for things in nature to thrive, to bask under the warm brilliance of the sun. The days become longer, and many flock to activities outside, all the while as the sun shines gloriously above them.   You are a sorcerer imbued with the heat of summer and the might of the midday sun. Thus, the power of both flame and solar radiance are yours to command. Perhaps you were born during a summer solstice, or an incredible celestial being blessed your family long ago. However you came to have these powers, you are a wielder of both fire and the strength of the sun.

Swampheart

The swamps of the world are home to some of the most adaptable creatures of the wild. You are no exception to this rule, aside from the magic that courses throughout your veins. It may have been the case that the wild magics that reside in some of the world’s most ancient swamps, or that you maybe had infused your blood with that of another entity of the swamp you had called home. You are a sorcerer of the swamp, and a powerful practitioner of magics that deal in acids, poisons, and maneuverability through both water and land, making you a great asset or a terrible foe.

Vampiric Bloodline

Your innate magic stems from the mingling of your bloodline with the blood of a vampire. Some sorcerers with this origin can trace their powers back to an ancient bargain with a powerful vampire. When a vampire takes particular interest in a mortal being, they may allow that humanoid to have a taste of their blood, granting them a semblance of power. This ritual is seldom practiced, and few vampires would even dare to try it. But this is not the only way to gain this origin, as many of these sorcerers can trace their powers to a near-death experience with a vampire. Whatever the case, vampiric magic permeates your blood, and your very being. Vampiric sorcerers most often try to hide their ancestry, since their origins can make them as reviled as the vampires that spawned them. However, a select few embrace their vampiric ancestry, and may even seek to become true vampires in death.

Volcanic Magic

Your magic stems from the rumbling power of the volcanoes, whose fiery cores sparks your blazing magic. Perhaps you gained this magic by surviving a volcano's eruption, or are deeply connected to an ancient primordial being from the elemental Plane of Fire. No matter how you gained your magic, you act as nature's eternal forge, using your volcanic magic to decimate your foes.

Warbound Bloodline

The magic that ebbs and flows through your body comes from an ancient and legendary warrior. You might trace your abilities back to an ancestor who participated in a seemingly endless war working alongside divine angels, horrible devils, tricky fey, or almighty Gods, wielding both might and magic and ended the turmoil. Or you may have been blessed by one of these ancient warriors to fight on their behalf, or even have the faint spirit of a fallen warrior resting in you. Possibly you came in contact with a piece of one of these legendary warrior's ancient magically infused weapons and its magic changed you. Regardless of the means in which you gained these abilities, the warrior's pride, martial prowess, and magic found its way to you.   Legends say many of these mighty battle-ready warriors found their magic most malleable and dynamic when used in tandem with a weapon, utilizing both arcane and elemental magic to bind a small fraction of that power to these weapons in specialized rituals known as an Arcane Bond. These bonds while very beneficial in combat, led to some unique anomalies toward their weaponry or even themselves. At your option, you can pick from or roll on the Bonded Weapon Quirks table to create a quirk for your character or weapon.

Wild Magic

Your innate magic comes from the forces of chaos that underlie the order of creation. You might have endured exposure to raw magic, perhaps through a planar portal leading to Limbo, the Elemental Planes, or the Far Realm. Perhaps you were blessed by a fey being or marked by a demon. Or your magic could be a fluke of your birth, with no apparent cause. However it came to be, this magic churns within you, waiting for any outlet.

Wine Sorcery

To many, drinking alcohol is a past time, something that one does when they are sad, angry, or wanting to find some way to escape from reality, or even have a good time. However, to you, drinking is a lifestyle. Making, drinking, and selling alcohol is like second nature to you, and this is due your magical influence over wines and meads. Perhaps you were blessed by a god of harvests or wine, such as Bacchus or Dionysus. Or, perhaps your family's bloodline is tied to a magical connection to wineries, meaderies, or vineyards, or you may have even once drank from a very special, magical alcohol, changing your life forever. However you came into these powers, you are one with direct and magical ties to alcoholic drinks.

Winterheart

The season of winter brings forth a time of cold winds, hibernation, and grey skies. Most of the land lies under blankets of white snow, and as the days shorten only the strongest and fiercest animals and people even dare to thrive amidst the cold. You are a sorcerer who controls the might of winter, with the power of ice and howling winds at your fingertips. Perhaps you were born during the harshest winter the land had ever seen, or you almost died during a blizzard. Or, you may have been almost frozen at some point in your life, your powers awakening from the experience. However, you came to obtain your magical abilities, you are a being of pure wintery magic.

Wooden Soul

Trees have long been an incredible part of nature; they provide oxygen for the air, shelter for creatures, wood for tools and weapons, and can grow to mighty heights and strength during their life cycles.   Your innate magic comes from the element of wood, from the might of ancient trees and forests. Some wielders of this rare magic often trace their lineage back to ancient druid ancestors, whereas others were exposed to some magical event within a forest or from a particular tree. Or you were blessed by a powerful fey, or born in the Feywild itself. Whatever the cause of your magic, your command over wood and trees leaves you a formidable force, both of nature and magic.
