Capital of the North
Scyandil is the Dendorian capital and has been for a very long time. It started out as a humble fishing village, just like most towns in the north, but over time, its industry expanded to trade, as it sat in the perfect middle point between most Dendorian population centers.
It finally became Dendor's because of it defensible position.
Geography
The city was built on the mouth of the Hjud River, which flows into Lake Baikem. It sits on the eastern bank, with only a single bridge allowing for traders to cross.
The northern climate dictates that all water here freezes in the winter tho, and it is at that point that the city is at its most vulnerable, if it wasn't for the fact that it was built in the middle of a pine forest, where no southerner would be able to fight effectively, especially if they had to march through a thick pack of snow first.
Infrastructure
A single tall wall protects the city, that goes all around, even on the lakeside, leaving a narrow strip to form the docks.
There are two main gates. One in the west, bordering the river, and this allows the guard to control the bridge easily, and the other is in the east, on the opposite side of the city, which opens to a road that leads to all the eastern parts of the nation.
The most distinguishing feature of he buildings is the wooden theme, and the steep rooves, that allow the snow to slide off easily.
Seasons
In the north, the city is walled in with snow, the east is mostly blocked, because the hillsides snow over, making travel very difficult, although there are still roads leading the the southwest, that remain active.
The city itself mostly relies on the summer to stock up on supplies, and in the winter, the use the lake to go ice fishing, especially if there has been snow, because they use it to make snow huts, to protect themselves from the freezing wind.
The snow can get up to a meter and a half in thickness during the winter, sometimes even more.
History
Because the Dendorian people remain largely tribal, provincial boundaries are fluid and frequently shift. The Scyandil has always been the seat of power for whichever tribe ruled the nation, a tradition that began during the era of the Eshen Dray. At the time, the city, then a mere town, served as an inland military base. When the province rebelled, the same city became a symbol of authority, a role it has retained ever since.
Over the years, the city has been sacked many times, mostly by rival Dendorians vying for control of the kingdom. Few southern kings have managed to rule here, and those who did never held power for long.
Recycled City
Because most building were always made of wood, and many still are, the city has been burned down many times, and it has been rebuilt larger and stronger each time. Even the wall has fallen and been rebuilt on many occasions.
There are even still remnants of the Eshen Dray wall in the city center.
Many old walls are used as the foundation for newer buildings, which is why some houses have one thick stone wall, even if they are otherwise made of wood.
Fortress
The Dendorian Kings do not live in palaces, that is a think of elves and southern folk, instead, they live in a fortress.
It was built on a hill near the river, and it was built relatively recently, as in, long after the initial city was built.
It consists of four walls, and a large tower, as well as several servants buildings.
