Direwolf

Maned Beasts

The fearsome direwolf is a great beast that commands respect from all in the world, despite being hunted viciously for all of history, they still endure. They can be identified by their large size, as their are the size of a large pony, or small horse, as well as their long manes.   They come in gray, white, and black colors, often a mix of the three, but some of them only a single color.

Territory

The range of the direwolf extends all across the western continent, as well as on the elven islands. Nowhere are they very common, as their large size means they need a large hunting ground, and the world cannot support very large populations of these animals.

Hunting Practices

They often hunt at night, when they have cover of night to give them a better chance at success. They hunt in pairs, and they will eat anything on legs, that being deer or bison, or domesticated livestock, such as sheep and cows. It is because of this that they are so incredibly unpopular amongst the civilized people of the world, even more so when to eat something on two legs, instead of four.

Social

Direwolves live in breeding pairs, they mate for life and will never leave their partner. They will only have one welp at a time, and raising it to adulthood is of utmost importance to them, although it takes only one year for them to become independent, and direwolves will raise one pup each year, the survival rate is still not very high.   When a pup does reach the end of the year alive, they will leave their parents to forge their own future, the first few years they will be alone, until they meet a partner, and become a breeding pair themselves.

Nemesis

The direwolfs greatest enemy in the wild is the fiend, they often have overlapping hunting grounds, and clashes between them, while rare, are inevitable if they cross paths.
While fiends are bigger and stronger, a pair of direwolves can outflank and overpower a fiend, although it is not an uneven fight, and there have been records of fiends killing pairs of direwolves.
