Velencei, the Bountiful
"Our walls won't break, even if hell itself splits open at our doorstep. Go ahead, try your luck." -Nera Tonner, Chief of Defence of Velencei and Head of the Iron Dragon CorpsVelencei is burdened with a complicated past. Historically the breadbasket of the realm, this city state is located on the fertile River Aul, the only river that runs from the Aeliph Sea instead of into it. Once a year during the spring the Aul floods the Velencei lands completely. During this period of time, citizens flee into the fortified settlements which become temporary islands, protected by the mighty walls that surround their towns. This is not the only reason for the fortifications; Velencei has had many battles with neighbouring city states, and their walls allow them to remain protected during sieges. To date, Velencei proper has not once broken during war, and the army there intends to keep it that way. Velencei and Aphios have never gotten along, with the last war between them being between 561 and 564. This campaign was disastrous for the city state, with heavy loses incurred and damages to infrastructure. The territory is projected to recover fully in the next decade, hastened by its strong infrastructure and large agricultural supply. Rebuilding efforts are still ongoing as of the publishing of this tome, with many places in the territory still recovering. The patron god of the city is Chauntea, due to the thriving agricultural scene of the city and the life giving floods she gives the Aul each spring.
Defences
The defining feature of Velencei's infrastructure is the towering walls that surround their cities and towns. Even the smallest villages are equipped with smaller versions of the stone walls; no new settlement is started without one. Great care is taken to keep the walls up to date, not only fixing damages caused by flooding or battle, but making sure that the space contained within is enough to house the populations as they change and grow. The largest and most impressive of the walls belongs to Velencei proper; a half a kilometre tall and 50 meters thick, these impressive battlements have never been breached once in the history of the city state, whether by water or war magic.
The making of these walls is a closely guarded secret that only a few in the city state are allowed to know.
Industry & Trade
The primary export of Velencei is food, exporting many types of crops that are grown in the area. In the past the exportation of goods was heavily restricted so that the city could concentrate on rebuilding, but in the last decade have been slowly trickling out to the outside world. This has helped bring money back into the lands, but a large population of the city is still facing hardships and trouble as a consequence to the war.
Geography
Velencei territories are on mostly flat lands interspersed with thick forests. The soil profile contains thick sediment layers with sandstone, shale and conglomerate as the bedrock underneath. The might Aul runs through the farmlands, easily flooding its banks when the spring arrives.
