Dragonborn

Born of dragons, as their name proclaims, the dragonborn walk proudly through a world that greets them with fearful incomprehension. Shaped by draconic gods or the dragons themselves, dragonborn originally hatched from dragon eggs as a unique race, combining the best attributes of dragons and humanoids. Some dragonborn are faithful servants to true dragons, others form the ranks of soldiers in great wars, and still others find themselves adrift, with no clear calling in life. The blood of a particular type of dragon runs very strong through some dragonborn clans; boasting scales that more closely match those of their dragon ancestor—bright red, green, blue, or white, lustrous black, or gleaming metallic gold, silver, brass, copper, or bronze. Dragonborn mature fully by the age of around 15, and live approximately the same length as a human life. They stand between 6-7 feet tall, and weigh between 200-300lbs. While majority of Dragonborn are born without tails, a rare few are born with tails.

Demeanor

Dragonborn owe their devotion and respect to their clan above all else, even the gods. Each dragonborn’s conduct reflects on the honor of his or her clan, and bringing dishonor to the clan can result in expulsion and exile. Each dragonborn knows his or her station and duties within the clan, and honor demands maintaining the bounds of that position. A continual drive for self-improvement reflects the self-sufficiency of the race as a whole. A dragonborn holds mastery of a particular skill as a lifetime goal. Members of other races who share the same commitment find it easy to earn the respect of a dragonborn. Many dragonborn also seek to help rebuild their race in whatever way they can contribute, be that seeking relics of their past, contributing to future knowledge, mastering a skill to pass onto the new generation or raising a family.

Faith

The Dragonborn follow a simplified pantheon; at the top you have Bahamut - The Platinum Dragon of Justice and Tiamat - The Scaled Tyrant; siblings and the first dragons. Bahamut is the Dragon God of Justice, and Tiamant is his evil twin Sister of darkness. The two represent a sort of balance, as is represented by an entwined symbol.
In addition to Bahamut and Tiamat, like the Dwarves; Dragons revere, if not worship their primal ancestors. Each colour of Dragon has a primogenitor, a first of their scale. While they may have individual titles, collectively these 10 are called The Aspects. Dragonborn of the same colour, tend to venerate the Aspect of their scale much in the same way the Dwarves venerate their ancestors and ask for their guidance.   The emergence of Morencia as a state caused a religious divide in the Dragonborn people. The Morencians found the remnants of Ember Cairne, one of the earliest colonies of Drakkenraug. They invited the Dragonborn, as a largely stateless people, to come retake a slice of their homeland and join the free peoples or Morencia in creating themselves a new home. Many Dragonborn took them up on their offer, and also embraced the Morencian religion of "The Guiding Light", having become disenfranchised with their god Bahamut, and the Ancestor-Dragon of each colour. There sometimes remains some animosity between those who still choose to follow the old dragon ways, and those who follow The Light. Most who had chosen to move to Morencia to rebuild the city of Ember Cairn have adopted the state religion of the Guiding Light, and have become some of its most dedicated and zealous adherents.

Ancient Glories

For a time, during an age gone by, Dragonborn once lived in a strong, vibrant civilization based on the collection of knowledge, and monastic martial prowess through the Second, Third, and Fourth Epochs. Legends say that their homeland of Drakkenraug in western Tyrean, was once the jewel of the continent with tall spire libraries, soaring mountaintop castles, and even floating cities. Drakkenraug extended its reach to some small overseas colonies to act as embassies, and centers for the collection of knowledge. They did not seek to conquer, but to grow and learn. But in the early 5th Epoch, the largest Orc Warhorde ever seen laid waste to the Kingdom of Drakkenraug, tearing down it's grand rocky spires, burning its ancient libraries (some of the oldest remaining in the world), and ransacking its wealth of ages. Left without support from home, their overseas colonies were left to fend for themselves. Many were sacked, and claimed by petty local rulers, with only a few surviving into the present time; the survivors scattered to the winds. Since then, the remaining Dragonborn on Esseas have largely been a stateless people. Not abused in the same way that Elves have been, for the Humans of Esseas had never been in conflict with the Dragonborn. In many states they were free to live as citizens and most valued their martial prowess, magic, and knowledge.   Several enclaves of Dragonborn exist on Esseas today. Most notably:
  • The Drakkenward - in the Ondari capital of Antares, a compact neighborhood; meant to mimic homes of dragonborn.

  • Rauthang Perch - a small city in Central Tiriande built into the sides and a honeycomb of caves in a series of rocky islands at the mouth of a river.

  • The tall, rocky spires of Dragonroost exist near the mouth of the Bay of Tureon, in the Grand Duchies of Aranoc. Seven spires of rock, hundreds and maybe thousands of feet tall clustered close to one another are linked by a series of bridges.

  • Ember Cairn - The rebuilt city of Ember Cairn in Lightforged Republic of Morencia, is the largest Dragonborn settlement in Esseas. Built on the edge of the arid canyon bordering the east, it overlooks the canyons and out into the Endless Golden Sea. Once the oldest Dragonborn colony and then laid to ruin or abandoned, the revived site has taken on near religious importance to them. Dragonborn from here are equally likely to be followers of the Guiding Light, as they are of Bahamut - The Platinum Dragon and the Aspects.

  • The Cindarian Dukedoms - host a large population of Dragonborn, particularly red dragonborn drawn to the fire based state religion.
