Kingslander (Kings-Lander)

Kingslander   Those citizens who hail from The High Kingdom of Tillain would be loathe to refer to themselves as Kingslanders. Instead, they would name themselves as a denizen of one of the many provinces that make up the lands of the High Kingdom, and the term 'Kingslander' is almost exclusively used by those who live outside the lands themselves. Though the moniker itself might not be considered insulting, most citizens will be quick to correct an outsider who refers to them by this generic term. They are a diverse people, and a great many different skin tones, hair and eye colours can be found among them.   Unity Through Diversity   Each of the over a dozen provinces of the High Kingdom has a unique culture, with customs, folklore and traditions that can vary greatly from province to province. Though some neighbouring lands might share similarities between them, the citizens of these places take pride in their differences. Grand festivals are often held to showcase the culture of each province, each with its own distinctive flair and festivities. Each province is granted a high degree of autonomy, and though there have been clashes between them, the need for the mutual protection provided by the Legion and their shared language holds these disparate lands together where others may have shattered apart.   The Language of Trade   The vast lands of the High Kingdom hold an abundance and variety of resources not often found elsewhere, and it is no surprise that trade has become the lifeblood of the kingdom. Merchants, traders and peddlers are often highly respected individuals, bringing both necessities and luxuries from other provinces or even more distant lands to the delight of their customers. This has facilitated the usage of a shared dialect, based on that spoken by the citizens of the central provinces, that over the last two centuries has become not only the lingua franca of the High Kingdom itself, but also of neighbouring lands as well. Traders, adventurers and settlers from the kingdom has spread this language, known to most as the Tradetongue, to nearly every land within reach. It is not uncommon to find this language being spoken in the markets of lands such as Daskar, or even places further abroad. Wherever there is coin to be made from business or adventure, speakers of the Tradetongue can be found.   Merchant-Adventurers   The citizens of the High Kingdom are well known for their adventurous and ambitious spirits. While most of the common folk are tied to the land and make their livings as farmers or tradesmen, some also set out from their towns and villages in search of wealth and recognition. People may shake their heads at these adventurous folk, suspecting (and often rightly so) that they will soon end up dead of disease or at the end of some monsters fangs, and though they welcome the coin and rare goods they may bring with them, they are also wary of the trouble such folk bring when they come into town. A band of traveling adventurers is not an uncommon sight on the roads of the kingdom, though the difference between these and the various bandits that plague the land is often an indistinct one.   The Iron Legion   The backbone and strength of the High Kingdoms power lies in the Legion, a standing military force known for the discipline of their soldiers and the ingenuity of their leaders. All citizens must serve in the legion for a period of no less than three years between the ages of seventeen and twenty-five; this service can be waived in exchange for a tax payed to the Legion. Service may take many forms, from soldier to blacksmith, porter to messenger, there is always a purpose to be served in the Legion, and an individuals talents can often bring themselves to the attention of their commanders. The various companies of the Legion are made of men and women from various provinces, creating a sense of shared identity between the people of the kingdom that is integral to its lasting success. Though the work is hard, the pay is fair, and those who serve in the Legion have the honour of knowing they have contributed to the safety of their homeland.   Kingslander Names   Male.
