Bond of Unity

The Republican system is over ten thousand years old now. They were founded on the principle of peace and unity, but alas, the peace didn't last, and no matter how much good they did, war always found them.

Now, they have been confined to the upper parts of the upper arm of the galaxy, they struggle to survive against the Rayth empire, and the Ekovian void invasion, however, they have gained new allies in the Terrans, and the Queendom of Light, with whom they share a common goal.

Some in the republic believe their time has come to an end, that it is now the turn of newer nations to take their place. Others believe their most fruitful relations with these nations mean that they will one day join the republic, and the galaxy will be united once more.

Government

The republic is led by a senate, each major system is represented in the senate by three senators. The senate is led by a chancellor, who leads talks and debates, as well as represents the senate to the public. The Senate chooses a new senator every year.

The star systems themselves are all ruled locally, in accordance with republican law.
The republic is a unitary state, although a very decentralized one. Systems collect taxes locally, of which they send a small percentage to the senate, but most of it remains local.
The senate mainly uses tax money for two things: to subsidize impoverished systems and to fund the republican army. However, smaller amounts of the money are used for science and research into new technologies.

The senate is in charge of making the law, they come up with new laws, are amendments to existing laws, and vote on them, if enough senators approve of the law, it is passed, after which the high court still has to approve it, in order to make sure it doesn't contradict any existing laws, and to make sure it doesn't violate any basic citizen rights, etcetera.

Rule of Law

Local governments have to follow republican law, as is decided by the senate, but they are allowed to interpret the law in their own way, and they are given the authority to make decisions on their own.

However, it happens occasionally that a criminal feels a local system has not treated them in a just manner, and in this case they may appeal to the high justiciers. if such an appeal is approved, which it only is if the local judges really did something wrong, then the high court will begin a session to decide what to do. This ensures that everyone gets treated justly.

History

The Republic was founded on the upper arm, but during those days, its center had been there were there is now the Rayth empire. This empire was already a threat then, but the republic succeeded in defeating them, and unifying most of the galaxy. This didn't last though, because the remnants of the Rayth were never defeated fully, and they were always ready to come back at the slightest showing of weakness by the republic, still, they endured, they survived millennia of war, and even today, as a shell of its former self, the republic stands as a beacon of justice and hope.

Flag

The Republican flag is a green field, representing life and growth, with a circle of yellow stars on it. These represent the unity of the founding peoples of the republic.
On the left side is a narrow band filled with a knot. This knot is made up of different lines going back and forth, making an intricate pattern, which is meant to represent eternity, justice, and dedication.

Capital World

The original capital of the Republic was Kryllix IV, but that planet was lost to the Rayth, who use it as their capital now, so they moved their capital to the world of Novussant, the homeworld of the Nouli. They were one of the founding members of the republic, and are now the most populous species of the union.
