Nilothar
Planet of Ancients
Nilothar is home to the Srimeesh, an ancient peoples, the very most ancient of all people, infact, as they were the first intergalactic civilization.
Cataclysm
Their planet was destroyed a long time ago when a nearby star, one which had always been the brightest in their sky, went supernova.
The star in question was a mere five lightyears away, and it was because of this that they had a mere five year warning.
They used this time to evacuate all their people and build an arc of sorts, they sheltered many of the native animal species in bunkers deep beneath the surface of their planet.
Aftermath
In the immediate aftermath, all multicellular life on their planet was destroyed, their oceans had been boiled away, their atmosphere had been completely wiped away, and their buildings and cities had largely been molten by the intense heat.
It took several decades for its surface to cool down, and then it kept cooling, because with no atmosphere to hold in the warmth, the planet became a cold, dead world.
Ascencion
It was during this time that the srimeshi people shed their mortal bodies, and adopted their metallic forms, pledging to never be caught vulnerable again.
They called their process of cybernification the ascension, they abandoned their mortality, but also their ability to reproduce.
They placed their nervous systems in titanium casings, from which they could remotely control their bodies, and receive sensory information. Their were placed in regenerative tanks, keeping them young and strong, and while their bodies could be destroyed, they could simply get new ones, as long as their brains remained safe.
It is unknown where they put their brains, but it is believed they are ll together deep under the surface of their homeworld, guarded religiously.
They can control their bodies from there, anywhere in the galaxy. It is believed this was made possible with advanced warp technology, but no one really knows.
Modern Day
The Srimeesh eventually rebuilt their planet, but they were ever able to fully restore their atmosphere, and they no longer needed one, Instead, they built miniature biomes, under grand glass domes, in which they created biospheres with what animals they had been able to save from extinction.
fortunately, they had long before the cataclysm, had the insight to store seeds of nearly every plant like organism that had grown on their planet, allowing they to populate their planet with complex ecosystems, acting as reminders of what had been lost.

Republican People
Nilothar and the Srimeesh people have been part of the republic for nearly its entire length of existence, and they were one of the founding planets. They were on the edge of the republic then, forming a frontier region on the upper arm, and so they are now, accept the direction of the frontier is in the other direction.
They were occupied for a length of time during the reign of the second empire, however, they were able to avoid full annexation simply due to them not being a particularly important system, neither in a very valuable strategic position nor particularly rich in natural resources.
Species Decline
The Srimeesh were once the prime species of the galaxy, their influence spanning across the upper arm, and into the core and beyond, but when they were informed of the coming demise of their homeworld, many of them went to visit it for a final time, some stopped eating out of despair, and others simply entered the vacuum of space without a suit. Many others struck out violently, sparking a civil war. It was apparent that this calamity didn't stay on their homeworld, and their species, in the span of five years, was reduced to a mere shadow of its former self, and those that survived vowed never to despair again.
