Session 35: Fragments of the Past, Part I

General Summary

"Oh, my dear Culkitath. What weary path have these dissidents led you to?"

Vengeance

13 jolts awake in a shadowy alley, the full moon casting a faint glow over the scene. Stars twinkle above, indifferent to the carnage surrounding him—several dead Praetorians lie nearby, and a fresh trail of blood winds deeper into the alley. Following the crimson path, 13 reaches the deserted docks, where he spots a Praetorian ship, its sails unfurled, already drifting away on the open water. Determined to board the vessel, 13 makes his move but is intercepted by a patrolling Praetorian defender. Recognizing 13 as the one responsible for his comrades’ deaths, the dark paladin seeks revenge. Despite 13's attempt to defend himself, the Praetorian’s great sword strikes with lethal precision, leaving 13 gravely wounded and slipping into unconsciousness.

Monster Under the Floorboards

Beneath the Monster’s Milk tavern, Ecrena guides the Departed through a storeroom to a concealed passage. She pulls a lever disguised as a wall-mounted candle, revealing a hidden doorway in the stone. Gesturing for them to follow, she introduces the Departed to the secret home of the Revenants. Inside, the group’s curiosity draws them to meet the strange assortment of inhabitants. Some are too engrossed in their meals to speak, while others engage in playful dagger-throwing contests for small bets. Despite the odd activities, there’s no sign of ill will among the group, and the Departed quickly feel at ease in the Revenants' lair.

Phantom Pain

Paz retires to the bunk he was shown earlier, while Loghain, Cul, and Zero head to Ecrena’s chamber for a tense conversation. The air grows heavy as truths are revealed. Ecrena explains that the Revenants were founded a century ago after a Praetorian assault on the town, led by Knight Commander Geoffrey Tavinter—Loghain's late father. She goes on to correct the widely believed "Revenant of Aramore" legend, explaining that while the martyr did drive the Praetorians away after confronting Geoffrey, they didn’t die in the battle. Instead, they mysteriously vanished soon after. Hearing this, Zero is enraged and storms out of the underground hideout. Her patron later confirms Ecrena’s and Loghain’s revelations: she has been missing for nearly a hundred years—and even the Raven Queen is unsure of where she went.

Scars

Following Zero's swift exit, Loghain and Cul admit to Ecrena that they once served the Praetoria. In a somber confession, Loghain reveals that he is the same Loghain Tavinter who led the assault on Memzu's capital, Adura, two decades ago. At first, Ecrena laughs at the absurdity, but as the gravity of the truth sinks in, she discloses a secret of her own: she once met a mysterious figure, clad in dark armor, who introduced himself as the same Geoffrey Tavinter from decades prior.

Two Graves

Driven by fury and confusion, Zero races to the Aramore cemetery, searching for a headstone bearing her true name, "Aurora Marri." When she finds it, she enlists Ivi's help, and together they dig relentlessly until hand and claw strike something solid. Before Zero can open it, she is suddenly frozen in place. A figure in dark robes approaches, speaking softly yet with an eerie sense of power. Their conversation is brief, and soon after, a collar is fastened around Zero’s neck, draining her of her strength. As Ivi's shadowy form fades, Zero catches a glimpse of 13's bloodied body on a nearby wagon, and just before she succumbs to unconsciousness, she hears the robed figure mutter Cul’s full name.
