Lord Argen and Lady Val Arianell, Sovereigns of Elgus

Lord Argen and Lady Val Arianell are the benevolent rulers of Elgus, Jhorna's capital city. The married couple wish only for one thing: to protect their city from the looming threat of the Holy Praetoria. As sovereigns, their duty to the health and well-being of the Elgus city folk is of utmost importance. They execute this task flawlessly, treating each and every citizen with the respect they receive in return, even to those wholly undeserving. Numerous city folk also note them attending many events like weddings, parties, funerals, and the occasional visit to the city's best taverns. Such an attitude keeps most of the citizens of the capital city in high spirits. Others see it quite differently, however.

Political Powerhouses

There are some that deem Lord and Lady Arianell unfit to rule. They cite that a strong, resilient pair is what the city needs to protect its citizens from the Holy Praetoria. To these nihilists, the couple doesn't fit the bill. With the atrocity committed in Memzu's capital still fresh in the mind, the city folk are on edge, unknowing of what the Praetoria's next move may be. Yet, there is a benefit to keeping the peace within the city: self-preservation. Elgus might be safe from self-immolation, but a raging inferno stalks the shadows, ready to claim yet another unprepared capital. The citizens of Elgus can only hope that their benevolent sovereigns are the immovable object to this unstoppable force...
Lord Argen and Lady Val rose through the political hierarchy of Elgus quite quickly. Many cite their penchant to commit good deeds and solidify relationships with the citizens of Elgus gave them the right to lead the city. When the late sovereigns passed from old age, Argen and Val were unanimously voted to succeed them. 20 years later, Elgus has grown its population, economy, and architecture tenfold. It became the second-largest capital in Azovar behind Zamostela, Memzu's acting capital after Adura was decimated by the Praetoria.

Tenants of the Temple

The sovereigns of Elgus reside within an immaculate, dwarven-built structure known as the Adamantine Temple. Contrary to the belief that no one but high-ranking members of the Elgus government can enter the building, the Sovereigns allow any and all to venture inside, giving every citizen the opportunity to appreciate the beauty of dwarven stonework.

A Commander's Promise

A few years before the Departed's inception, the Soveriegns were approched by Commander Sheperd, armed with an effective, though cruel, plan to learn a great deal about the Praetoria. The Sovereigns agreed and Sheperd confided her secret to the pair, solidfying their future to the plotting commander's quite literal "cold grasp."

Truths

Argen and Val are fake names. Lord Argen's real name is Dameon Arianell and Lady Val's is Eilene Arianell.
The Sovereigns of Elgus are nothing more than stand-ins for the true ruling body: the silver dragon Valstrayana who operated under the guise of Commander Wynona Sheperd. Even after Sheperd relieved her duties as commander to Zee, she stays within the city under a new guise as a single mother. The Sovereigns still consult the shapechanged dragon on matters best for their, and her, city.

The Praetorian Incursion of Elgus

Elgus, as the proud capital of Jhorna, has not been targeted by the Holy Praetoria since its inception. This changed as a result of commander Sheperd's plan, flawed in its own ways. As a result, the Praetoria raided the capital city while the Departed were away on a mission for the commander. The city was ransacked, innoccents were killed, and Lord Argen was beheaded as a result of the incursion. The Departed and commander Sheperd, revealed to be a shape-changed silver dragon, fought back the Praetoria along with capturing Knight Commander Illeiya. Soon after, the paladin order was convinced by a turned Illeiya to vacate the city. Valstrayana revealed more of her plan to the Departed, alongside retrieving her daughter's, Tamara's, soul and resurrecting her. Through immense magical potential revealed to be Tamara's connection with "the Sight," she revived Lord Argen.
