This entry is for something that hasn't happened yet in the story, but I'm hoping to build toward as I keep writing. It's a rough outline of what could come to pass. Click the button below to travel to this potential future, or use the top navigation bar to retreat to safety.
— Note from the author
  • information on the fatal condition the protagonist suffers from
  • we don't learn about this until muuuuuch later
  • we'll first see protag deal with THE SYMPTOMS at various points
  • they'll start to regain some memories that suggest at THE FACTS
  • eventually they'll be able to piece it all together, likely with help
  • THE FACTS
  • people with the money for it had designer babies
  • these were also people with the money to not need to give birth themselves -- these babies were artificially inseminated, then grown in an artificial womb, with genetic modification during development
  • the most guaranteed modifications were to remove known illnesses and to modify the baby's eventual appearance
  • the less guaranteed ones were related to natural talent and intelligence
  • once the babies started growing up, a concerning trend was noted
  • many of them displayed the same symptoms of an unknown chronic illness
  • and many of them, as adults, began dying
  • the process had created a new congenital disease
  • it was fatal, and had no cure
  • THE SYMPTOMS
  • this needs to be something that comes and goes
  • each time it becomes more severe and lasts a little longer, and eventually it becomes too severe to be survivable
  • the obvious option is something with the heart. heart racing, hands shaking, can't catch your breath, intense fatigue, can't focus. like there's a giant hand inside your chest, gripping your heart and lungs so neither function correctly
  • could be temporary paralysis? start off losing all feeling to a foot or something, then it comes back. Over time, more becomes numb and stays numb for longer. eventually the whole body shuts down
  • overpowering fatigue? can largely only sleep, staying hydrated/fed becomes a problem. this sounds like a coma
  • THE SOLUTION
  • you could live your best life for however long it lasted, which is an option many took
  • others underwent a variety of experimental treatments, hoping any would help them or perhaps those who came after
  • protag and others chose to enter stasis until a cure could be found
  • but society as it was ended before a cure was ever found
  • those left in stasis either died there, or eventually woke up, becoming today's Travelers
  • Summary
