The Stag Knights

Structure

The Horns are distinct, The Horns jut and weave each point could be at it's fore. You know not the Knights as you are foreign and as such you shall never know the knights.

Assets

It is said the Stags are the greatest of military forces, it is said each is an army unto themselves and supported they are unbeatable. These knights own their own country and rule over practically all ongoings.

History

The paths are wild and overrun, it will be hard for you to stumble back through them. A word of warning if one does, the path leads deeper into the primordial forest where ancient monster still slumber awaiting the time when stags are prey once more.

Demography and Population

The population clumps in the forests, in the mountains, in the gorges. The world is harsh and full of terrors, the knights keep order in place yet chaos still calls out. Populations sit at a couple of hundred in places with the largest cities not being much bigger than ten-thousand people. The races in which are predominantly human with Dragonborn and Goliaths being common and Forest-Gnomes and Half-Elves being less so but still existing in noticeable numbers.

Territories

Bertholf is the property of the Knights. That makes them Sovereign, Caretaker and Serf to the land and they will not shirk this duty.

Military

Considered the most impressive fighting force in the world the most remarkable thing is the Knights remain unclassified with troop numbers, level of formal training or even military standing. Spies tend to return either empty handed or not at all. The Knights are also exceedingly hard to infiltrate due to the riggers of the life, the required racial and provincial background and on top of that the great deal of rhetoric that is promulgated by the Knights.

Religion

Theoretically Religious views are freely held but the more chaotic of deities and especially those based in nature are seen as negatives to any living in Bertholf.

Foreign Relations

Bertholf is perhaps the most closed of countries with minimal trade to outer lands. It has a positive relationship with Rineholm and have been at peace since Ostirix the Burnt assisted in its conception. Algenon however is an irritant to the Knights as they poke and prod to find little opening giving little time among the Berthovians for Drow and Wood-Elf alike. It is one of the few countries with an Imperial presence and no direct treaty with the Empire, it is also the only country not tied to the Yn'vian pledge of relief. The country Bertholf had the greatest relationship with was the Merlanti as though their Knighthood was strange the Stags respected it and what the Merlanti attempted. They also greatly distrust the Vilgefortzi ideal of Knighthood seeing them as little more than slaves to the Church.

Agriculture & Industry

Agriculture and industry are still small scale and primitive compared to more technologically advanced nations yet due to Bertholf's self-sufficiency they do not require the masses of farming many others do.

Trade & Transport

There are a couple of northern ports but trade is minor and usually only passes through these ports. Bertholf vessels are large boats with ballistas. Mostly bulls and rams pull carts with horses also used as pack animals.

Education

No standardized education, most do not know basic literacy nor arithmetic.

Little again is exported, primarily gold, iron and lumber.

Only rare metals and minerals that do not exist in Bertholf.
Legislative Body
It is taken before the whole of the Knighthood to make decisions, the commanders speak, the specialist advisers and voter lieutenants bring their specialties to play, the council will bring assertions and attempt to undermine and the warleaders will then make a decision, the descendants will vote and after this it shall be brought before the heroes and wise, this brings us to be signed by the anointed blood of the old dynasty before being overseen by the knight commander and their council. This done the voted lieutenants have a chance to force revisions if they represent majority or if the chair-bound sees fit for the law to be rewritten else-wise, the law becomes sanctified and shall be enforced upon the populace after a period of amnesty.
Judicial Body
The closest knight represents the full might of the law, rank is meaningless to ensure fairness. No matter the stature of those around the squire may rule upon the knight-commander to ensure the low shall never fear and always band to the high.
