Matthew Callahan, along with his twin sister Amelia, was a born healer, in every sense of the word. A remarkably empathetic young man, he enrolled in medical school as soon as he graduated from high school in 1936, and enlisted in the army as a medic at the beginning of the Second World War. It was as a medic during the war that he lost his life, though with his medical skills and his magical healing power he was able to save hundreds of lives before he lost his own.

Matthew Callahan had the power of healing, being able to heal any wound with the laying on of hands. Being a healer, he lacked any other magical ability, even the ability to cast spells, but always felt that his gift made up for any lack. His power would draw his magical energy to heal his patients; once his magical energy was depleted, his power would draw upon his physical energy, though usually this was only for near fatal injuries or illnesses. When this happened it left him feeling sick and exhausted. Healing too often and too quickly without recovery often left him vulnerable to sorcery sickness.
When he combined his powers with his twin sister Amelia, the pair were able to heal much faster and much more life threatening wounds than either could ever heal on their own. It was this curious twin ability that saw them save so many lives together during the war, and ultimately lose their own lives in the process.
