Treek Species in The Witch-Star Theorem | World Anvil

Treek

Mammalian in nature, the Treek are a fairly new uplifted race and are both looked at with great interest and looked down upon as the new children on the hab-block in equal measure.   Best known for their large ears, the band of soft fur that grows around their throats, and their curious and....amorous nature, they have taken to the stars with great gusto and verve. Integrating readily into modern society.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Bipedal and bimanual, the Treek are similar to humans in their structure, leaving exception for things like their skull structure and reproduction. Case in point they have large ears that help with their hearing a great deal.   Of average, if slight, build they have thinner bones than many species but a lot of musculature within their arms and upper torso. They have a slight webbing in between their fingers and also between their underarms and upper torso. Evolutionary leftovers.   They are most famous for a 'collar' of fur that naturally grows around their throat which gives the appearance of wearing a thick fur scarf at all times.

Genetics and Reproduction

A mother will give birth to one or two children per pregnancy.   She can, however, be expected to have many pregnancies over her lifetime. Many more than many sentient species would even consider.

Growth Rate & Stages

Newborn Treek grow quickly, reaching full size within 14-16 years. While they reach physical maturity quickly, their mental maturity is slower, and they won't reach it for a few years more.

Ecology and Habitats

Their home planet is in a centuries-long ice age, without an end in sight, leading to their habitat being largely subterranean to stay out of the lion's share of the cold.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Carnivorous. Consuming the smaller animals that make their homes in the expansive tunnels and thermal vents that criss-cross throughout the curst of the Treek's home planet

Biological Cycle

When a certain temperature is reached, below zero degrees celsius for most of the Treek, they enter a state of heightened attachment. They affected Treek will seek to be in physical contact with those that they are close to. When the opportunity presents itself, and there are enough individuals, this can result in a large pile of individuals simply cuddling up to each other, attempting to preserve body heat.    This makes the Treek interesting travel partners when on arctic planets, or when winter comes around anywhere.

Naming Traditions

Both first and last names involve many 'I's 'E's and 'K's.    Uniquely, the 'given name' and 'familial name' are inseparable to the Treek, with both always being presented when a name is asked for, such as Iket'Tratak. The first name and last name are partitioned by the apostrophe, and to not present one or the other would be of dire insult to the bearer and their family.   Of course, many Treek that make it off world learn of the confusion that their naming convention can cause to the uninitiated, and either learn to go by their first name or to forgive those that drop one or the other out of ignorance.

Beauty Ideals

The ideals of the Treek are very human but alien enough to throw people off. The look for the things that would mark someone as a great mother or father, all the while looking at that collar of fur that grows around their neck.    For males, it is to keep the collar cleanly trimmed and shorter. Close to the neck. For Females, it is the cultivation of the collar into being as full and volumetric as possible.

Courtship Ideals

Courtship can be slow to form for the Treek, as they often take a while to get a sense of if they truly wish to court someone. Often taking months before the Treek individual suddenly shows great interest in the object of their affections. To be 'in a relationship' is a big deal for the Treek, so they take it seriously in turn.    It is not uncommon for multiple Treek to compete for the hand of another. These conflicts can be quite vicious if a 'winner' cannot be decided, often deseceneding into violence.

Relationship Ideals

The relationship ideal for almost all Treek is to start a family. Whether through natural reproduction or adoption, the growth of the proverbial family tree is the end goal for most couples involving one or more of the Treek.
