Drywood

Drywood is a port town located in Faryon, a relatively short distance overseas from that nation's capital city, Nylanor.   The town keeps itself busy with its trade, providing passing ships with much-needed fresh supplies and repairs, while the local guard maintain order by keeping any rowdy sailors in check. Due to its proximity to Nylanor, it is a popular stop for adventurers either venturing to or from the kingdom's capital.   Drywood is relatively self-sufficient and independent, governed by a mayor chosen by the local guilds, although some of the residents have become concerned about the growing influence of the Adyrian Trading Company in local matters.

Demographics

The vast majority of Drywood's residents are humans, although people of the world's many other races are not an uncommon sight, mostly due to its nature as a port town, although some have decided to settle down in the town for good.

Government

Drywood is governed by its mayor, Elman Clearguard, who is supported by the guilds of the town as well as the local town guard, led by Gevan Sesk. Taxes are collected among all residents on a yearly basis, and the local guards oversee the law enforcement together with the mayor, who doubles as the town's judge - to the dismay of some. Minor crimes result in fines, while more severe crimes may result in prison sentences or even execution.

Defences

Bordering the sea on one side, the rest of the town is surrounded with a simple wooden palisade, reinforced with cobblestone at its bottom. Several watchtowers are placed alongside the palisade, manned at night by the town guard, whom also guard the two town gates and the docks. The town guard are roughly thirty in number and are moderately well equipped, wearing chainmail and using a variety of arms such as swords, spears, bows, and shields.

Industry & Trade

Most of Drywood's industry and trade is based on the passing ships. The Shipbuilder's and Carpenter's guild provide repairs and, rarely, new ships, while several shopkeepers provide fresh food sourced from farms in the area. The wood used by the shipbuilders and carpenters is taken from the surrounding forests.

Assets

Various stores can be found in Drywood, most prominently of which are:
  • Ehlim's "Good as new" Bargains: general goods store
  • Ironed out: Blacksmith
  • Vordhall's Arrows: Fletcher
Other than these stores, there are various smithies, carpenter's workshops, and several fresh goods stores and warehouses, primarily aimed at business with passing ships.   The Temple is small but holds shrines of various popular deities. Vafir, an Elven priest, takes care of it for the people of Drywood.   The biggest tavern in town, The Rounded Seagull, prides itself on only serving the finest (if somewhat watered down) ale and has been ran for the past three decades by Grannik, a somewhat hot-headed, but welcoming, Dwarven man with the largest beard in all of Drywood.

Guilds and Factions

The Shipbuilder's Guild is made up of (almost) all of the town's shipbuilders, and hold significant weight within Drywood's economical affairs. They build new ships and do repairs on ships that come into port needing them.   The Carpenter's Guild, meanwhile, is smaller but still significant - responsible for the construction of new buildings within the town, as well as repairing the ones already in place.   The Miner's Association is a relatively new guild, working closely with the Adyrian Trading Company, and represents the residents of Drywood that work in the mines close by. Often gets into trouble with the Shipmaker's and Carpenter's Guild.

Geography

Drywood is nested by the sea. A little to the northeast of the town lies a sprawling forest, from which the town sources most of the wood it uses, foresters carefully replanting saplings to ensure the generations to come will have wood to harvest as well. Otherwise surrounded by farming land, a little further to the northeast lays a steel mine, worked by people from town and maintained by the Adyrian Trading Company. Further to the north, still, likewise built by the sea, lies Saker Keep, the Trading Company's outpost and base of operations on the island.
