The Savage Isles
Geography
In the highest orbits of Errota one can find a small cluster of islands called the Savage Isles. This tightly packed collection of small and mid sized islands move loosely together through the skies. Navigation through the cluster is difficult at the best of times as the islands constantly change direction as they collide and bounce off each other. Partials fill the air creating a haze, and occasional small rocks and boulders are jarred loose and fall away.
The islands themselves are baked by Solas's furnace; its heat keeping all but the hardiest plants from growing. Water is a scarce, precious resource in these wastelands, with only the largest islands having small rivers, and oasis' being scarce.
Localized Phenomena
Adding to the navigational hazards of the region, Static Storms are a continuous threat to Airships. As the islands hit and grind against each other they build up a static potential not seen elsewhere in the world. Once the buildup reaches a critical point, a discharge event can trigger. Once one isle beings to discharge it frequently triggers its neighbors in a rolling cascade of lightning called a Static Storm.
Ships, creatures, and even small isles caught in these Static Storms are often destroyed. At best they suffer extensive damage. A seasoned Aeronaut knows to keep a constant eye on the birds and beasts of the region. If they begin flocking towards cover or worse yet are absent all together, it is a sign of certain trouble not far off.
Fauna & Flora
In parts of the region small forests of Aplock trees grow. The trees are small, only a dozen feet tall, with scraggly miss shapen branches. The leaves are grouped in trusses of 5 and excrete a silvery film that works to protect them from the excess heat and light. The Aplock tree produces a small red berry in large clusters. These berries have an almost velvety appearance and are eatable but very bitter. To a seasoned survivor, large clusters of Aplock trees are an indicator of water concentrations just below the surface.
In other parts of the wastes a small grass like reed grows in large clumps. The Faaleyce {Cat Folk} call this plant Shucore but it is more commonly know as desert grass. The Shucore plant filters moisture from the air and stores it in the hollow center. The Faaleyce have begun cultivating the plant using elemental magics to encourage its growth. They feed it as fodder to their growing herds of domesticated Linnacks.
While the region boasts the usual life (bugs, lizards, snakes, etc), due to the scarcity of water, it has relatively few large species with the aforementioned Linnacks being one. In addition many species of birds and flying creatures make the rocky edges of the islands their home, but primarily hunt in the open air and seldom make their way inland.
Natural Resources
The primary natural resource of the region is the difficulty and dangers of navigating its interior. This makes the defacto capitol city, Lawless, truly resemble its name. The region serves as a safe port for thieves, pirates, assassins and other criminal elements of the world. Most legitimate shipping gives the region a wide berth. Likewise most governments lack the resources to effect any lasting change.
For the few Faaleyce who live in the region, this has always been home. Once a hunter-gatherer society, they are slowly adapting to agrarian in the aftermath of the shattering. That said, they live in the region because they simply lack the ability to move else ware.
