The Welkin Isles

The Draconic wars raged for thousands of years. The Elementals and the Dragons, evenly matched in might and power, were unable to defeat one another.   In the end the world itself was broken. In a titanic explosion, it shattered into fragments thrown high into the sky. In the following years much of the world fell, collapsing back outward into the void itself or falling into fragments below. A few shattered remnants remained however. Left to drift through the skies held aloft by unknown forces.   The dragons where banished, locked away in the isles they had helped to create. The cores of vanquished elementals, now called shards, where left to litter the remnants of the world.   In these ruins, the mortal races where left to fend for themselves. Left to adapt to a world so changed it was beyond recognition.
