The Shards

"The Kerekans believe this region barren. Lifeless. Fools. In their relentless pursuit of knowledge and power they fail to see what's hiding in plain sight."
— the Chronicler
An enormous portion of western Kerekos was obliterated during the rise of the Kerek League when Rekazi Vort's experiments with voc went catastrophically wrong. Fertile farmland and forests were replaced by fields of twisted and jagged black rock spires. Jutting out from these spires are razor sharp shards of what came to be called starglass, giving the region its new name.

GEOGRAPHY

The terrain in the Shards is nearly impassable, and much of the interior of the zone is completely unexplored. Even pathways designated as "safe" are treacherous and demanding in both skill and physique, and few brave them voluntarily.   The black spires that dominate the landscape are unnaturally smooth, making climbing impossible. The stone they're made from has proven incredibly sturdy, outdoing all attempts to drill or blast through it. In addition, recent research has revealed that they radiate a miasma-like aura that saps the strength of those that touch them. Several Disciplines have funded huge amounts of money to discover the cause.   The shards of starglass are easier to avoid, but present their own dangers. Though nearly as indestructible as the spires, shards have been known to collapse without warning, sending chunks of starglass crashing to the ground. Explorers caught by such a collapse are either crushed under the weight or bleed to death from deep slices caused by the pieces as they strike.   Deeper in the region, deep crevasses form a maze of caves and canyons where the Lightless hide. Lightless carefully navigate these passages with Shadowscript and kill any League agents that dare descend into the depths.

ECOLOGY

The Shards are almost completely lifeless, though recent reports from those that have dared to venture further in have noted sightings of strange glowing creatures, the same glow present in void beasts. This has stirred great interest in the League, and the Master of Ecology especially has offered huge bounties for live specimens.   One creature that has ventured closer to the edges of civilized Kerekos is the shardspawn, a large burrowing beast that stalks smaller groups of travelers, snatching the weakest and pulling them underground. Shardspawn have a carapace similar in appearance to starglass, and some theorize that they are born from the fragments that collapse.
