HoloGauns

For most of pre-spaceflight, mobile devices were hand-held - a simple, easy solution to needing something with a lot of power in an instant, but with a fatal flaw. It's possible to drop or lose a handheld device, and even worst case, have it stolen without your knowledge. Any decent Hacker can skim and reprogram a locked device in a few minutes if they have access to it. Thus, the Gauntlet Computer was born. At first, it was no more than a phone connected to your arm, but it was clunky, and lacked no-hand use, and thus, when Softlight was miniaturized, projection modules made using anything but the HoloGaun obsolete.

Utility

HoloGauns are essentially quantum supercomputers, able to be carried around on your arm, weighing no more than a kilogram. Capable of accessing the Cyberweb, inter-networking with your own devices, utilizing Hardlight, or just simply gaming, their use is nearly universal in a world of technology. With the near universal use of software to run every single thing that one may use or have in them, a HoloGaun is purpose built to connect and synchronize use with any and all tech, acting as a HUB for nearly everything, letting them "talk to each other."   Customizable just as much on the inside as the outside, the HoloGaun's functionality is nearly limitless. Capable of installing purpose-built chips, utilizing 3rd party software, or just letting you kitbash your own, they are often the very center of people's lives technologically. With the use of Hardlight technology, they are not only giant screens, but physical shields, tools, and even weapons, solid photonic matter able to completely replicate the function of even highly complex electronically enhanced blades and bludgeons.

Social Impact

Luckily, from the benefits of Mass Production, HoloGauns are cheap enough to be in the hands of even the poorest individuals, and because of it, they have somewhat become notion of self-expression, instead of a status symbol. Due to the outside of the HoloGaun being highly modular, they can be seen in a nearly limitless arrangements of colors, shapes, animations, or just be nearly invisible.   On the more violent side, HoloGauns are somewhat seen as the "ultimate treasure" to steal from someone - if you steal a HoloGaun, assuming you're good enough to crack the lock whatever it may be, it can access the entire life of the user, from stored money, assets, or social information, to more abstract things such as general use history, chip setup, or security information such as passcodes or biometric signatures.
Access & Availability
HoloGauns are ubiquitous in all place in the Galaxy, and likely the Universe. Almost every species eventually lands on a tool similar to a HoloGaun over Phones or Laptops.

An Important Note   Most HoloGauns do not have a physical screen, opting for a completely opaque Softlight screen - worry not about others seeing through the back, unless you wish it.
Easily the funniest reason HoloGauns are popular is due to the surprisingly often issue of having your device float away from you in Zero G.
