Planes

A Plane is a limbiferous body circumscribing a multidimensional region in the Limbo. The term "plane" is a convenient simplification, adopted instead of the word "dimension" because Planes themselves contain multiple spacial dimensions.   Planes are divided in True Planes - informally called Planes - and Protoplanes, according to the characteristics they exhibit.   Our familiar universe is inside the Orbis Terrarum, a plane that divides its perispace with the Orbis Alius forming an anchored and non-specular binary system (see ahead).

Planar Attributes

Planes have observable attributes that are used for their study and classification.
  • Duration or Tempus is the interval between its Conception - the moment the plane manifests in the Limbo - and its Collapse - when it dissipates. Duration can be Finite or Undetermined;
  • Extension or Spatium is a quality of the space circumscribed by the Planar Space. Extension can also be Finite or Undetermined;
Planes can also exhibit characteristics in relation to other Planes.
  • Sibling Planes are planes that share a single Perispace;
  • Specular describes planes that present similar physical characteristics - within the Planar Space. Indentifying specular planes is incredibly difficult since the Planar Space is a chaotic system, and events might develop in wildly different ways from their initial conditions in the Specular Moment (the moment where one or more specular planes were identical) due to the diverging influence of the Limbo;
  • Efigiform describes Planar Spaces that reproduce events of another Plane in a kind of formal echo, sustaining a condition called False Specular Moment in perpetuity. Efigiform planar spaces are never identical to their Plane of reference, presenting several different characteristics, and are thus called for being seemingly poor copies of the original;
  • Anchorage is a property of sibling planes, where their Shores are fixed in both planar spaces - crossing an anchored shore will always lead to and from the same points of entry on both planes.

Anatomy of True Planes

For a Plane to be considered a True Plane it must present undetermined Duration and Extension and be enveloped by a Perispace. The True Plane is composed of two main parts.
  • The Planar Space, which includes all existance within the plane;
  • The Perispace, an energetic structure that protects the thread of the Planar Space, mitigating the impact of the Limbo's disorder.
  Multiple planes can share a single perispace, but it is not known how often this happens. When it does, the Perispace is weakened in the points where the two planes meet, allowing passage from one plane to the other in what is called a Shore.

Notable Protoplanes

When a Limbiferous Body possesses a Planar Space and a Perispace, but its Duration and/or Extension are finite, it is called a Protoplane. Protoplanes present several different characteristics, but some patterns of conception, development and collapse have been documented and are now predictable. These protoplanes are called Notable Protoplanes.

Evanescent Protoplane

The Evanescent Protoplane is a protoplane that does not possess a perispace. Due to this abscense, it starts dissolving back into the Limbo from the moment of its Conception, having thus a finite Duration.

Phantasmal Plain

What leads to the emergence of the protoplanes known as Phantasmal Plains is a mystery. They manifest as an appendage clinging to the perispace of a True Plane, sharing its energy in a parasitic manner for a short time. The Phantasmal Plain is anchored and efigiform in relation to its plane of origin, being a reflection of the planar coordinates where it appears - its degree of similarity and extension depending on the amount of planar energy contained in the wave that formed it. A Phantasmal Plain always has finite duration and extension.

Planar Island

A Planar Island, sometimes simply called an Island, is a protoplane created by an Entity. It possesses a type of perispace called Tenuous Perispace that restricts the plane's extension, making it finite. Although a Planar Island has indetermined duration, it is speculated that its collapse comes whenever its creator's Mana is depleted.

Reality Bubble

The Reality Bubble is a protoplane created by one or more magical beings. It possesses a finite duration and extension entirely reliant on the amount of Mana dedicated to its conception and sustenance. The Reality Bubble manifests at the exact spot of its conjuring, existing inside another Plane and thus making its duration and extension not only finite, but calculable. Reality Bubbles have a fake perispace called a Boundary.

Utopian Plane

The Utopian Plane, commonly referred to as a Pocket Plane, is a philosophical protoplane postulated in antiquity that could be created by one or more Magi through a ritual. The creation of such planes is studied and debated intensely by scholars, but the manner of its execution remains a mystery to this day. It is agreed upon that the creation of a Pocket Plane is a feat impossible to achieve by a single generation, and that it would require incalculable amounts of Mana. Its maintenance and access would also be a challenge   The consequences of the creation of an Utopian Plane are also unknown. The simple feat of creating a Planar Island would be enough to attract the Council's attention and would without a doubt expedite at least a Thaumaturge designation, making this achievement a well known mixed blessing.
