Thaumaturge

Thaumaturge is a designation given to mages that have achieved spectacular works of magic that defy the knowledge of their age, called Wonders. Thaumaturges are considered "living treasures" by the Council, receiving a stipend and being rewarded with the necessary resources to continue their work, ranging from simple housing to materials and assistants - as long as they agree to pass on their studies to a disciple upon their death.   It is not uncommon for mages to receive the title of Thaumaturge posthumously, not only due to the difficulty of identifying miracles, but also due to the nature of the execution of said miracles frequently resulting in the death of the practitioner.

Formal Processes

Being one of the highest commendations the Coucil can bestow and often involving substantial resources, the bestowal of a Thaumaturge designation follows very strict procedures to guarantee all the requirements are fulfilled.   First, a mage of Magister rank or higher, the one responsible for the Wonder excluded, must petition the Council in writing for evaluation. Additional Magisters can add their countersignatures to grant legitimacy to the petition, granting it increasing priority to reach a Senator. The Senator then evaluates the petition. If accepted, the Senator appoints an Audit Party of three Judges to evaluate the Wonder. The Audit Party conducts a study into the petitioned Wonder to decide if it fulfills the Council's criteria. If it does, a second investigation is conducted into wether or not a Thaumaturge designation should be granted and to whom.   It is not uncommon for a Wonder to be confirmed with multiple or even no Thaumaturge designations being granted given the varying circumstances of its creation. A work of Wonder sometimes involves collaboration between severa mages and even intergenerational efforts.
