Major Martin Andrew Maclaren, DSM, MM, Lord Darnley (a.k.a. Spook)

Intelligence Officers have a raw deal, being stuck trying to get all the information they can from senior staff, and mostly failing, whilst being a major part of the combat staff of the Battalion and companies of which they serve. To be one is to master the turmoil of information processing and procedures, taming that seething, and roiling dance of combat.
Major Martin Maclaren, had, until recently, managed never to be a staff officer, always ending up as a command side officer in the 6th Battalion, the Royal Anglican Fusiliers. He was a pretty good commander, but because the rules said that all officers required staff side experience, he kept getting denied a battalion level command, even with 5 years of being a Major. This flat out refusal to do his time as a staff officer, was a major source of contention between Martin and his father, who was a notoriously capable staff officer, as well as an impressively decorated command side officer.
It was Alastair Macgregor, after a visit to Maclaren's dying father, Lord Darnley, in 2980 as he was leaving Earth for the Solent Corps training, that who offered Maclaren the S-2 appointment. Making him an offer he couldn't refuse, that when Macgregor took over Corps command properly he would take 1st battalions' 2iC role, Martin finally jumped at the chance to further himself, repaying the debt that Macgregor had owed the dying old man, General Callum Maclaren, 3rd Lord Darnley for 15 years.

Personal history

The first of five children of Lieutenant-General Callum Maclaren, the 3rd Lord Darnley, and his wife Ginny, he spent a large portion of his life resenting his father, who spent the middle 10 years of his son's life mostly away, fighting as one of the officers in the Royal Gloucestershire Light Infantry Regiment against the Tarquin. Indeed, it was Callum Maclaren who gave Alastair Macgregor his field promotion when he was Battalion commander.
Despite this resentment, Martin's childhood was rather pleasant, his mother doting on him, and home-schooling her children rather than send them to boarding school like Laura Heywood-Floyd, and this meant that he had much better relationship with her, than with his father.
