Alastair Macgregor

The Doctor

As seen in

Colonel Alastair Edward Macgregor, GC*, DSM** CVO, CBC, PhD (a.k.a. The Boss)

The Commanding Officer of 1st Solent Rifles, and the Senior Officer of the Solent Corps, (Callsign: Octavian) Alastair Macgregor is amongst the most decorated officers in the Army, due in part to skill and in part to some god awful luck. His 30 year career has not exactly been varied, with the majority of it fighting the Tarquin. However, as the first and only commanding officer of the Queen's Own Anti-Revolutionary Company, the principal internal special operations unit of The Ministry of Defence, He has certainly been all over the Commonwealth.

A major scar on neck, right shoulder and right knee. Past broken nose and a broken jaw. Currently in that weird period that he is technically under middle-aged for life span, but biologically he is definitely entering middle-age. Full head of hair which is solidly grey around the edges. Muscle tone still extremely solid. Lost of the majority of his hearing in his right ear.   O-, No known allergies, Left Handed.

Body Features

Normal Human. His hands, back and feet are pretty scarred, but has no obvious replacement bits. Face is all there, just about.

Facial Features

Ever so slightly wonky jaw, but have to be close to see it. Small but pointed nose that has clearly been broken and dark brown eyebrows. Scar across right eye and chunk missing from Left earlobe.

Identifying Characteristics

Tattoo of the activating words of Galadrial's Phial in Tengwar up his arm.
aiya Eärendil elenion ancalima
Hail Earendil
Scars all up his hands and arms. A particularly knotted mass of scar tissue on his right shoulder and neck, from a delayed treatment of a Laser wound. incomplete left ear lobe.

Physical quirks

Left handed, walks with a slight limp caused by a rebulit kneecap.
His right scapula was pretty well shattered during the battle of Helm's Deep so arm only rolls 3/4s of movement. Very little unaided hearing in the same ear, though this occurred much later, tends to stand with left ear cocked towards the speaker, even with aid in.

Apparel & Accessories

Standard Uniform Regulations, with purple edging and backing for QOARC service. Has 2 swords: one issued 2806 Pattern Infantry Sword and one gifted 2754 pattern sword.

Has a super-rattley, 2850 dated, EM-9 that was issued as his personal weapon upon graduation from AIT, at which point it was almost 110 years old, that he has taken everywhere for nearly 30 years.

It is a full weight, 28.75mm X 900mm 2754 pattern sword that has been blued and gilt. The gilding is a large, stylised galactic arm, etched into the left hand side of the blade, that starts at the ricasso and ends with the fuller near the tip. Whilst on the right-hand side of the blade, there is the royal monogram and a stylised solar system, with a 'handwritten' Queen's Own Anti-Revolutionary Company monogram scroll along the length of the fuller. This is kept at his parents' house since joining the Rifles.

Personal history

The eldest son of a Royal Marine Major, and an university professor, Alastair Macgregor enlisted into the Royal Gloucestershire Light Infantry Regiment, after completing his PhD into cross-species viral infections in Catechols and Humans, in 2954, aged 24. Despite much protestations, from his family and his training officers, Macgregor chosen career was as a Combat Medical Technician, fulfilling a goal that was sidetracked by the biomedical science degree and subsequent PhD, until the drive for new infantry caused by the initial Tarquin attacks occured in 2951. Flying through both basic and advanced infantry training, he was promoted to section lead both times. During AIT at Fort Benning, Georgian colony, his nose was broken by Staff Sergeant Lovett, starting a feud that, despite his best efforts, have not lead to Lovett's arrest or death.   It was relatively early in his career, when he was caught up in the horrific rout on Auckland prime, during which he rescued 24 members of the platoon he had been emergency attached too, as it defended a forward operating post that was overrun by the Tarquin, after the collapse of the frontline. Sergeant Macgregor, along with Staff Sergeant Paul Lisbon, held the garrison together for 5 days, before being picked up by the Navy once the Tarquin had bypassed them. Despite being wounded at least 4 times, Macgregor was to be found wherever the fighting was the most ferocious, instilling courage in his temporary charges. For this, he was awarded his first Military Medal. It was sometime in that battle that he had his jaw broken, making it difficult for him to speak for about a year, until he could get sent to the rear for specialist help.   In 2959, now a Colour Sergeant, Macgregor was commissioned to the rank of 1st Lieutenant when his luck failed once again. After the failed attempt of preventing the Tarquin breaking out of their beachhead on Alice Springs, the RGLIR was forced to retreat back 250 miles.
Alastair Macgregor Circa 2959
In this retreat, 3rd Platoon lost almost its entire command section, bar Macgregor and the Radio Operator, Pvt Roberta Esposito, and suffered a further 30% casualties. This damage them slow to move and they were becoming removed from their company. Macgregor, therefore, made the decision to form a rear-guard. This decision lead to the fight the battle of 'Helm's Dyke' for 2 days before an airlift team could reach them. When they were reached, the platoon had suffered 100% casualties, but fortunately not many more deaths, due to the intensity of the artillery and orbital bombardments that Pvt Esposito had been able to keep calling in. The battle was so named by Macgregor, because it was the outer works of an truly massive, ancient, Catechol fortress at the end of a deep gorge, which he also dubbed 'Helm's Deep'. The surprise is the name stuck.   This delaying action allowed the RGLIR to hold the newly dubbed 'Hornburg' for a week, before not only being reinforced by other regiments from the 9th CAA, but to go on the offensive, pushing the Tarquin back to their landing site. For the first time since the Tarquin invasion of Commonwealth space, nearly 10 years earlier, a planet had been defended. It was a significant victory over the Tarquin and showed, at last, that they could be beaten. It was during his recovery from this battle, during the closing stages of which he was shot at close range (which what looked to be suspiciously like a human weapon), that he met Dr Alexandra Murray and fell in love with her, pretty much at first sight. They got married two years later on the HMS King Alexander. Elizabeth Macgregor, was born barely 8 months later.   By this time, the Regiment had fallen to 30 companies in 5 battalions from 50, due to the brutality of the war with the Tarquin, leading to Macgregor becoming the 2iC of 4th company, 1st battalion within 3 years of his commissioning. Eventually, He was given command of his old company, the 3rd, 2nd Battalion, when more companies were folded together, marking a drop to 24 functional companies in three battalions, it was here that Macgregor first met SSgt Patrick Ironsides who had become his Company Quartermaster Sergeant.   In 2968, Major Macgregor was brevetted to Lt Colonel, and made the commanding officer of the RGLIR, until a suitably experienced permanent replacement could be found. This promotion from Regimental Operations Officer to CO came after a particularly nasty fight where the regiment HQ was ambushed by a Tarquin 'marine' team. For his quick thinking and bravery, which rescued most of the staff as well as most of the 1st company, he was awarded a second bar for his DSM, as well as his brevet rank. In the process of rebuilding his regiment's command, he promoted Ironsides from CSM straight to Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant Major. Macgregor's own promotion to Lt-Colonel was not made substantive because of the events of the Sunil Sethi Incident. By 2969, the RGLIR had fallen to being only 15 companies strong after a particularly nasty pasting that the Tarquin gave it during their assault of PX4761, and were finally, after fifteen years of solid fighting, being sent to the rear for 3 years of leave. However, on the way back to Cheltenham, 3 companies including Macgregor himself, were siphoned off by Lieutenant General Edward Treskow and were used as a component of the Special Forces Support Group (SFSG). This lead them to being vital to capturing or killing insurgent leaders with the 22nd Hereford Regiment.   During this time, Macgregor and Ironsides were stuck, living like locals for 6 months, gathering intelligence and shadowing the rebelling Prime Minister of the Indian Super Sector, Field Marshal Sunil Sethi, and his staff, who had lead the coup, killing him, coincidentially, as the sector Parliament buildings fell. Awarded for tenacity with a George Cross and his Lieutenant-Colonelcy substantiated, he was given the chance to form a new unit, the Queen's Own Anti-Revolutionary Company. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Execpt they do not say anything.   The QOARC's exploits are classified 'Top Secret' and not to be released from the archives for 500 years. There are, however, whispers. Whispers about a man simply known as The Doctor glimpsed throughout the colonies, whenever revolt was fermenting.   At least that is what Macgregor likes to scare uncooperative Generals with.

History

Having met in 2959, when Alexandra patched Alastair back together in the fortress of 'Helm's Deep' after his successful rear-guard against the Tarquin and being shot by Colour Sergeant Lovett. A few weeks later, he found out in rounds that she was the second surgeon for the procedure, the perfectly neat sutures being her handiwork. The two, now both, lieutenants had enjoyed an exceptionally passionate argument about post-op infections and their treatment for an hour. He won, having a PhD in immunology helped.   As she was responsible for his care, she found herself chatting to him after rounds, enjoying arguments with him about immunology, haematology and what constitutes good shooting. When he was well enough, the then Lieutenant Macgregor, asked her out on a date. This date went spectacularly well, he took her to the firing range and taught her how to shoot straight with a pistol, whilst they continued their argument about post-operative infections, before being invited back to Alexandra's billet. Their second and final official date was her taking him to see a emergency valve replacement performed on one of the division staff officers, followed by an ancient movie, Apollo 13, in Alastair's tiny Lieutenant's billet. Their romance was interrupted by Alastair's constant frontline deployment, but it carried on nonetheless.   They got married two years later on the HMS King Alexander. Elizabeth Katherine Macgregor, was born barely a year later.

History

Despite her father being away, fighting on some misbegotten hell hole, for most of her life, Elizabeth and him have an excellent relationship. This is because whenever he had leave, or when they were on transports to the next fight, he spent as much time as possible with his daughter, instilling a sense of leadership, teaching her shooting and fencing. They would listen to his ancient music choices, and read books together, with Alastair reading the Lord of the Rings to Elizabeth when she was 5. Everytime Macgregor was wounded and taking rest time, Elizabeth would read to him one of the books of the Legendarium.
