Deck of Many Things

Of all the grand and misbegotten relics of magic, none are so wonderful or so terrible as the Deck of Many Things.   It is always found in a simple, if worn leather case. Inside, however are thin plates of finely worked and decorated metal the size and shape of a deck of cards. When drawn, the picture on each card moves in a strange display before the effect takes hold.   None know the origins of this strange item. Some believe it was created by a faraway god of mischief and left in the Twin Worlds as a prank. Others believe it was created my a mad mage, or was simply a piece of the chaos plane of Limbo that fell to the Material Plane. Some simply say that it always existed, working chaos since existence was new.   Its appearances also don't seem to follow any logical laws of time or space. It is said that it is simply woven into the Divine Weave wherever and whenever it can cause the most mayhem.

Significance

The Deck of Many Things has appeared in many legends from every era of history. It has been associated with incredible risk for wondrous reward. Using it has often been portrayed as either the ultimate act of foolishness, or an act of tremendous desperation.   According to vague stories, fortunes have been won and lost, lives have been altered dramatically for better and worse, and earth-shattering power has been granted and taken away. Avela Darkwood was said to have been temporarily turned to evil by its power, and it's well-documented that Larrison Darkwood was elevated to nobility by a lucky draw. Talm Six-String was turned from a half-elf into a tabaxi by it.   There is no true documenting of the effects of its various cards, save for a few vague historical accounts. It is also believed that it possesses a malicious, or at least mischievous intelligence. The only thing that is truly known is that the cards are capable of affecting reality itself.
