Ashen Shard

Millenia ago, the terrible Ashen Crook of the goddess Lesav fell into the hands of mortals. Adventurers destroyed it for the greater good, but occasionally, fragments resurface bearing a fraction of the artifact's awesome power.
One was discovered by Eldain Mal'atre and Vord Ink-Heart in Mandia in a crypt guarded by a disillusioned lich. This shard was used by Vord to destroy the Legion of the Manticore. It was then surrendered to Eldain, who cast it into the Positive Energy Plane.
Another was discovered in an undersea ruin by Koto Takasuro. This one was used in a failed attempt to destroy the city of Mir'assen. It was then surrendered into the care of a representative of the Order of Eternal Repose for disposal.

Significance

Like the artifact from whence they came, the shards can be used to raise a large number of the undead. This ability is much reduced, however, and the amount of magical expertise required is much greater.
Also like its original source, its use has a corrupting effect on the user. Eventually its power becomes more seductive as its use becomes easier. The power quickly becomes an addiction, eventually compelling the user to attempt to destroy all life.
