Selkie
Selkies are a species of large oceanic predators that resemble anthropomorphic leopard seals, seven or eight feet tall, with massive claws on their flipper-like hands, and rows of razor-sharp teeth.
Selkies are omnivores with a strong preference for fresh meat, and have been known to eat almost anything they can catch, from fish and sea birds, up to and including humanoids. Whether or not this is the behavior of a minority, or normal for selkies as a group, is unclear, as the man-eaters are the members of the species your average seafarer are likely to meet.
The selkies' most noteworthy ability is that each individual is a skilled shapeshifter, able to take on the form of almost any humanoid at-will. They do not seem to do this to replace a specific, extant individual, but instead craft personas for themselves, and play the parts like a skilled actor. "Civilised" selkies (though they hate the term) have been found playing the parts of common fisherfolk and dockworkers, as well as noblemen and wealthy merchants, plus everything in between. There have been many claims of a "tell" one can spot to identify a selkie in disguise, but none have been confirmed as real.
Another common misconception conflates selkies and sea hags in various ways, though in truth the two groups seem to absolutely despise one another, and the guise of a sea witch seems to be the one persona no self-respecting selkie will ever adopt.
