Xenopterid

Whispers tell of the Xenopterid as a living nightmare—a spindly, chitinous horror with blade-like limbs and a hatred for light. Hunters who track it rarely return. Survivors speak of flashes in the dark, of friends vanishing mid-sentence, of blood smeared on walls without a sound. Some scholars believe the Xenopterid is not of this world, but a byproduct of planar decay or forgotten magic. Whatever its origin, only one thing is certain: when it finds you, it doesn’t roar—it removes.

Basic Information

Ecology and Habitats

Xenopterids are rarely found in stable ecosystems. Instead, they are drawn to transitional spaces—burned forests, crumbling ruins, long-abandoned outposts, or zones warped by magical fallout. They prefer places that are dying or shifting, as if feeding off entropy itself. Reports suggest they travel through hidden tunnels or burrow deep beneath the earth, emerging only when darkness and fear have already taken root in the area. They abhor open skies and light, seeking the cover of mist, storm, or shadowed canopy.

Behaviour

Solitary and predatory, Xenopterids are terrifyingly intelligent and patient. They stalk their prey for hours or days before striking, testing defenses and identifying the weakest link in any group. Their elongated limbs and bladed forearms allow them to silently perch on walls or ceilings, and they prefer to pick off isolated targets before vanishing into the night again. They never vocalize, but strange clicks and rhythmic tapping can sometimes be heard just before they strike. When wounded, they become more frenzied and erratic, attacking with savage bursts of violence.
