Thegn / Thane

The Thegn (also called Thane) are the retainers and warriors found in Anglo-Saxon lands. They are above the Ceorl by having a better weregild (fixed here at 1200 Shillings), and general owned hides of land (small land owners). They rank below earls but above freemen of the courts., they acted as a form of semi-elite infantry, backing up or alongside Huscarls.
They generally fight with long swords and/or one handed axes, and had chainmail, a shield, and a highly decorated helmet with a face guard. The decorations are generally highly detailed and expertly done carvings usually containing totems of animals, warriors and/or deities.
