The XIII Legion in The True Dark Ages | World Anvil

The XIII Legion

The XII Legion was a member of the Roman army during the Western Roman Empire. It was considered lost at one stage on the border of Germania, and thought to have suffered at the hands of Germanic tribes crossing the Rhine.   Strangely, many peoples along the Rhine, on both sides, have reported seeing the Legion. Each report seems to say that the Roman Legionnaires are alive and will stop at settlements for supplies before moving on. They speak Latin exclusively, and seem at times in a daze, while other times they seem to be quite able of body & mind. The Legion disappear to vanish as quickly as they appear, and they seem to accept that the Empire has fallen. Each legionary is equipped with old fashioned equipment, and some have reported that they have appeared to fight as mercenaries for different factions.   What texts that mention the Legion at about the early 400 AD, or slightly after, say it was cursed to bounce forward in time after assaulting a Germanic tribe led by a Hag. The hag defended the tribe and uttered the curse that the men would be forced forward in time a few centuries.   There is no standard bearer or leadership for them, and everything is decided by lots. The legion is left with 65 men, and have had to adapt to living as best they can. They still follow their old legion traditions.

Description

A Roman Legionary is a Roman or Romanised citizen that fought for Rome. Now defunct due to the break down of the Western Roman Empire, there are pockets of Europe that still contain these centuries old soldiers. They usually fought in units of 8 and part of a Century (80 men). When they are formed up they can form a shield wall to protect themselves, and their javelins (called Pilum) have it's neck made in a way to bend when it hits a shield making the opponent's shield weigh more than it should making it useless. They have shields called scutum, that id straight, oblong or oval but is near head height. Each shield has a metal boss in the middle that can be used to punch an opponent. Their usual melee weapon is a gladius that is a form of short sword.
