The Umayyads

The Umayyads were the first Caliphate ruling from the old Persian heartlands to the Iberian Peninsula. They also controlled many of the islands of the Mediterranean, along with North Africa, and the Arabic Peninsula. They fell in the year 750 AD to the Abbasids, and now only control the Iberian Peninsula & Northwest Africa, called the Al-Andalus region. This has now been called the Emirate of Cordoba. Al-Hakam I is the current ruler. There is an elite bodyguard that fights for and protects the Emir called Haras, made of Christian Visigoths with the present leader being Comes (count) Rabi.   They are a former shell of what the Umayyads were, and have followers made up of Berbers, Bedouins, and Moors, along with Christians in Iberia. There is regular threats of rebellion by the Iberian population who are predominately Christian, and hate the Islamic leaders.
