The Byzantine Empire

The Byzantine Empire controls the region that once belonged to the Greek City States and many parts of the southern Black Sea. Elements of the Greek states there still remain, hidden away in pockets working from the shadows. At present it is controlled by Empress Irene of Athens. It is a major power rivalling the Franks, and known as a major player in trade with parts of the Silk Road coming through it.
