The Bear of the Black Forest

The Bear of the Black Forest is a recent legend that has sprung up. Found around the northern region of the forest this creature seems t obe a spirit of the hunt and the kill, the aggressive violent side of nature. It seemed that the legend first appeared it coincided with the desecration with an ancient grove deep in the region.   A few months before the Bear started attacking individuals and small groups, a small force of Saxons chanced upon the grove. Deciding to camp there for the night, they examined the remains of anvient carved stones noticing that many had carvings of bears everywhere. None of the men felt it right to disturb the grove unless absolutely necessary so many stayed at the edges and left a few minor votive offerings to appease any residual spirits present.   During the early hours, a force of Frankish scouts chanced upon the same grove. Spotting the Saxons, they quickly set up for an attack. Moving in attaching with bows & arrows, and slings they quickly drew melee weapons and dove in.    The Saxons didn't stand a chance and were quickly overwhelmed. Leaving the grove awash with body parts and blood, the Franks left taiking anything of worth with them.   This proved to be a mistake, and by dusk the blood sacrifice attracted the old powers still lingering in the grove awakened an old spirit, one of violence, bloodshed and the hunt. Built for revenge and the ability to slay multiple targets, the Bear of the Black Forest had been unleashed.   Tracking down what it could of the Franks that attacked the Saxons, it massacred them. After they never checked in with their command, others were dispatched to find out why. Again, the Bear appeared at dusk attacking & slaughtering what it could. Those that survived and made it back to their command spoke of a huge strange and bloodthirsty bear attacked them leaving little alive. Not believing that a single bear could do this, the command wrote it off, saying that it must be multiple bears in the region becoming accustomed to feeding on battlesites.   After a few weeks, more and more stories surfaced including attacks on small settlements & work camps. In most cases it all reported attacks on or after dusk, and ending at dawn. Every time it involved a massive dark brown bear, slightly twisted in nature with glowing red eyes being seen first before an atack. Little is left alive including the killing of livestock and any structure containing life being severely damaged in the process.   Found throughout the region of the nortth of the Black Forest there seems to be no pattern as to who is attacked. Instead it seems to be in the forest itself and never beyond, always happening between dusk and dawn, and randomly around the area surrounding the old grove.   Nobody can seem to work out how to stop it at present and most are too scared to enter this ancient forest now.
