Shire Reeve / Sheriff

A Shire Reeve (Old English scīrgerefa, or in modern times, a sheriff) is a county official found in Anglo-Saxon lands in Britain. They have control over a shire, or county, acting as an official for the crown or local nobility. They can levy taxes, monitor and apply laws & punishments, raise local militia for law enforcement, and such-like. Each shire reeve can deal with the local nobility, and even religious leaders, to make sure there is everything is running smoothly & legally. The jurisdiction of a shire reeve is called a shrievalty. They are sometimes an office in cities too.
