Shipwrights Profession in The True Dark Ages | World Anvil

Shipwrights

Shipwrights make ships and other floating vessels. These are usually done at shipyards for the larger nations, and evenĀ  anywhere were there is access to a quay. They have all the basic equipment of a carpenter and have access to other specialty occupations such as ropemakers, sail makers, and smiths. They usually have to draw up or be given plans to what the ship is and how it is to look / function. A few shipwrights are highly inventive and a prime example is the shipwrights of the Scandinavians who make & oversee the construction of their dragon boats.   They are paid quite well for their skills, and many civilian & military contracts can earn them quite a bit of prestige. At the same time a few are not above using this to innovate new ship parts, or even cut corners if they can get away with it. In the latter this is true if it involves local settlements & individuals looking a personal boat or ship.   Many cultures use the knowledge and skill of shipwrights, with many of the larger empires having standardised ships & boats in their borders, and navies.
