Scotland / Alba

Scotland, or Alba at this time, is in a transitionary period. The Picts (or Painted People to the Romans) control large parts of Alba from the east coast inwards. They seem to be a subset of the Caledoni who are lowland Alban, and they speak a version of Brythonic Celtic. The south eastern part of Alba falls under the Northumbrian Angles, a powerful Anglo-Saxon territory. To the west, the Scotti (a Gealic tribe) controls the west coast and and the western isles, over to northeast Ireland.   At present the main king (at least of the Picts) is Caustantin mac Fergusa being king from 793 AD, and a major threat to the Scotti & their base at Dal Riata. He rules from the Firth of Forth to the Orkneys, from his base in the kingdom of Fidach, his fort of Craig Phadrig, near modern Inverness. On of the previous kings (Oengus mac Fergusa (729 - 761 AD)) invaded Alut Clut & Northumbria establishing a peace treaty with the Angles.   The Scotti are bound to the west coast, and rules Dal Riata from the fortress of Dunadd, now near Kilmartin at Argyle and Bute. They get their name from the Latin term for the Irish (Scoti). The region takes in the Western Isles, Argyll and Bute and Lochaber in Scotland, and also what becomes County Antrim in Ireland. In 562 AD St Columba established a monastery on Iona of the coast. It has gone through a revival after being beaten in the past by the Picts under king Áed Find (736–78 AD).   Alt Clut is the original Brythonic name for Dumbarton Rock, and a major Christian centre and local rulership for the Strathclyde region, though has lost some of this over the preceding years.   The Anglo-Scottish border region is known as Bernicia, and has a large mix of different Scottish, Pictish, and Angle peoples living here. It acts as a border between these people and are generally thought of as a part of lowland Alba.
