Raqqa Settlement in The True Dark Ages | World Anvil

Raqqa

Raqqa is a city in modern day Syria. It is on the Euphrates river. It is the present capitol of the Abbasid Caliphate, with the court of Harun al-Rashid. The main governmental bodies still exist in Baghdad, and the two are in constant communication. The chief Quadi is based in Raqqa too.   The region Raqqa sits in has been occupied since antiquity with mounds in the region being tied in to the Babylonian city of Tuttul. It has been dominated in the past by the Greeks, Romans & Byzantium. Despite being Muslim dominated there is a strong Christian element in the region too.   As part of the present Abbasid Caliphate, there is a strong architectural element from this empire, as well as elements going back right to the Babylonian period sometimes apparent. There is a large military presence here with troops from all over the empire serving to protect the seat of power. Trade is carried out here too, with many peoples vying for the Abbasids patronage & coin. Like any major city plenty of double dealing, assassinations, and back alley treaties also take place. More than one magic user has passed through, either aiding the military & court, or causing untold damage.
