Quaggoth are humanoids covered in pale fur and with animalistic features. Also, they are generally hunched when still, have pointed ears, and sharp teeth. They inhabit the Underdark, though this was not always so.   When Elves came to Midgard from Alfheim in a bygone age, the quaggoths were already living in many regions of the world. They were nocturnal arboreal hunters, with a primitive but distinguished language & culture. For whatever reason, the elves drove them to near extinction, and in the process drove them underground to the Underdark.   There the quaggoths tried to survive in such a hostile environment. Desperation turned them into hunters of the Underdark, raiding Dark Elves, Deep Gnomes and Dwarves to survive, and also feeding on the fungi, mosses & lichen found deep below ground. The former would scour region clear of the quaggoths, while the latter forced their adaption to tolerate higher & higher levels of poisons. After a while, they soon learned to be careful of other intelligent Underdark creatures, and to only take the bare minimum from these dangerous foes. They developed heightened senses to deal with the lack of light, and lost the colouring of their skin & hair. Unfortunately, they also were driven to adapt to a more savage existence due to losing the majority of their language & culture in the process. Also, being cut off from their usual prey species led to a certain amount of cannibalism, which they resort to if food is scarce.   Sometimes dark elves make use of them as basic shock troops & guards, breeding them further to increase aggression. Most dark elf houses have large amounts of quaggoths now due to this, though the latter can still rebel. Mainly this is due to the animosity ingrained towards elves.   In a rare few parts of the Underdark, chaotic magics coalesce and can fill an area. Any quaggoth that enters or is born in one of these areas can be blessed with a few innate spells. When this happens they can become leaders of packs of quaggoths, similar to shamans. They are called Thonots by others of their kind.
