Physician / Healer Profession in The True Dark Ages | World Anvil

Physician / Healer

Physicians are medical practitioners in the more civilised parts of the world, and many regions relied on local healers. The former is usually found in larger settlements, and the latter is usually found in smaller settlements, many 'barbarian' tribes, and regions where there is no no access to the more advanced beliefs. European physicians are familiar with the Greco-Roman treatise of medicine, and many will have access to local folk medicines too. The latter type is usually tied to religious groups, like shamans and the Druids. In some aspects astrology is used to work out the disease and how to cure it. Also, in some regions magic is used, and certain amulets worn to protect the wearer from disease.   Most believe that spiritual, as well as physical, elements cause disease and illness. They also believe that many illnesses are caused by sin or some other religious taboo, but also that certain conditions can lead to disease spreading from person to person, that certain living conditions can cause illness, and that certain people have greater predisposition to ailments. Many of the European physicians also believe that the body has four humours that need balancing (blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm). They have a rudimentary understanding of the make up of the body and how it's laid out. In the Muslim world it is advancing quicker and more scientific in it's understanding of illness than Europe at this time.   In many ways it is more empirical & pragmatic, looking to cure disease than by what causes it, and potentially avoiding it at times. Herbal treatments are generally available in some form for many ailments, and could be proscribed if any of the herbs were locally present. Some high ranking members of society could get rarer herbs and plants with medicinal properties imported. Poppies, and to a lesser degree marijuana are two examples of this, being used for pain relief.   Monasteries run by the Roman Catholic church has libraries with detailed knowledge of medicine, and usually one monk is skilled in the arts of medicine. This is due to them having to be self-sufficient, and a place for learning. Locals generally look to these as places to help out when a person has an ailment that they need help with.   Christian charity also helps, due to need to cure those of the faith, especially those who are on pilgrimages.   Surgery is also performed, being taught at universities throughout Christian lands, and is generally looked down upon by many. This is partly due to the practise of having barber surgeons.
