Petra Settlement in The True Dark Ages | World Anvil

Petra

Petra, or Raqmu / Reqemo to the original inhabitants, is a city in the Middle East. It is unique in being carved into the local sandstone by the Nabataeans who inhabited the region (and at one stage, a vessel state of Rome), who had lived long enough in the region to be able to survive in the desert and mountains. Saying this, the region has been inhabited for roughly 6500 to 7000 years. It is in present day Jordan. Also, it was a major region for trade routes, especially frankincense.   The Nabataeans are not there any more, and the city is abandoned. The majority of it is carved deep into the rocky sides of hills & mountains. It has the distinction of being linked to Iram (to somewhere in the south east). Both are rumoured to have had a sizeable population of Nephilim, or giants, living in the cities. How much this is true is unknown, though locals who live in the region do not stay long and report eerie comings & goings of huge humanoid shapes in & around the city.   Two major rumours abound about Petra. The first concerns that major treasures still exist deep underground in vaults with their guardians still present. What these treasures are, and exactly what these guardian are too, is anyone's guess. The second, arguably the most disturbing, is that in one part if seen from the air, is a massive flat area above some part of the city. It is big enough to be seen but what it is a part of, or what is below it is unknown. What locals exist around this region talks of an ancient myth concerning a pit in the ground that the rock was put over, the purpose being that the pit contains Satan, and his devils, and the stone is to hold them in place. Only when the End Times happen will the stone be removed and all that is in it will be judged.
