Mutations Condition in The True Dark Ages | World Anvil

Mutations

Many creatures are lucky that mutations naturally occur that are a part of nature. A few times though, when the conditions are right (or possibly wrong), a creature can suffer an extreme mutation. This can range from creatures without scales growing them in place of hair, a new eye forming on their forehead, or their arms or other limbs turning into tentacles. Some are more serious and easier to spot than others, and in many cultures the mutant is hunted down as an abomination and killed outright, usually burned at the stake or other extreme form of execution. A rare few cultures look upon mutants as being blessed by deities that they worship, and many underground cults worship gods that mark their followers out by such mutations. Many who are mutants survive far away from larger settlements & civilisations creating their own settlements & hiding away. A few also fall in with creatures such as beastmen, who themselves are prone to mutation. Generally mutations are viewed as gifts to those cults who worship deities & creatures like the Star Gods, evil deities, and demons & devils. The odd time warpstone, places saturated with magic, or corrupted by other otherworldly events gives rise to local flora & fauna mutating beyond the norm.
