Merfolk are attested by many myths and legends around the world, especially from communities on the coast & sailors. This species is rarely seen by land dwellers, and because of this, many stories have sprung up. The only certain fact is merfolk exist and they build their settlements deep in the ocean using whatever strong material they can find. They use bone & coral for many tools & decoration, and usually exist in small groups who travel around an area. Sometimes a powerful individual rises and binds larger groups together, at least for a while. Tales exist of a rare few making contact with land dwellers and the females tempting men to a watery death. They appear as half human / half fish, usually with a tail in place of legs, and other minor changes.
