Ireland / Hibernia

Ireland goes into this century as a collection of independent territories (tuatha). Many attempts are being made for control of the seat of the High King at Tara. This usually is disputed by the northern & southern branches of Ui Neill a family purportedly descended of Naill Noigiallach, an historic king of Tara who died in 405 AD. It is known as Hibernia at present.
People live in rural communities & settlements, with larger towns being primarily monastic sites. There is still a strong belief in the old ways (Gealic pagan gods & beliefs), that the church as been unable to fully stamp out. It's society by this point, is homogeneously Gealic in culture, society and language.
The Ulaid (Ulster), the Connachta (Connacht), the Laigin (Leinster), Mumu (Munster) and Mide (Meath), are the five main regoins / groupings, with north eastern Ireland being part of the Scotti. The Cenél Conaill in the (north) west, and Cenél nEógain of Ailech in the south are the two main Clan Ui Neill that are vying for high king status. The traditional kingdom of Ulaid, dominated by Dál Fiatach and Dál nAraidi, was now more or less confined to the area east of the river Bann. In Laigin, Uí Dúnlainge is the dominant dynasty c. 800. The Uí Cheinnselaig had not been able to claim the title king of Leinster since 728.
Áed mac Néill became the High King in 797 AD.  Commonly called Áed Oirdnide, was King of Ailech before becoming high king.
