Halflings Species in The True Dark Ages | World Anvil

Halflings

Halflings are diminutive humanoids found primarily in western and northern regions in Europe. Smaller enclaves are found in one, maybe two, regions of south-eastern Europe. They speak their own language that is similar to the Celtic Dialects, though these are not interchangeable and seems that the Sylvan language of the Fey has also had an influence too. Some scholars link the Halflings may have originally came from the Feywild, and settled in regions with a high Celtic population. Indeed, the Celts in these regions leave the Halflings alone if need be, although they would happily trade, fight alongside, and live with them in settlements. The Halflings are peaceful people, given to farming, other agricultural pursuits, and acts of gluttony when left alone. For all their size, they can eat & drink at a pace that would make a Hill Giant proud. Talking of size, most Halflings are small, and weal compared to other humanoids, with two distinct groups, and their settlements usually being one or the other, and mixed settlements usually having a dominant group. As a whole they are also known for being exceptionally lucky.   The first grouping of Halflings are the Lightfoots. They are the most common out of the two, at least being the most common encountered. They hare more lightly built out of the two, and given to traveling the most. They usually act as entertainers, cooks, scouts, thieves, merchants, and fixers when encountered in groups of mixed creatures. Most are friendly and gregarious, but also careful when round larger beings at first. Their settlements are spacious with their buildings built into the sides of gently sloping hills and other natural features, usually in fertile regions where they grow crops, and raise animals. Most will travel beyond their own settlements when adulthood first hits just get a look at what is beyond the settlement's boundaries, before returning and settling down.   The second is the Stout Halflings. They are slightly more dour than Lightfoots, as well as stockier & hairier. They are the better builders out of the two, and better with weapons & armour, as well as having a better chance of surviving toxic conditions. There is rumours that they are descended of Halflings that interbred with Dwarves, and it seems to show. Their settlements are sometimes similar to a Dwarven stronghold, with the buildings defended by stout stone walls, and stone being featured in most homes too. They seem to act more as masons, and militia in many Halfling settlements, along with bounty hunters & builders.   Both will work together easily enough, and very little friction happens when either group of Halflings mix. If anything their settlements seem to grow an prosper even further when they do. When they are in settlements Halfling communities have a council of sorts, made up of the Elders of it. They seem happy enough with this as these elders act as a calming influence, and a voice of experience & reason for the rest.
