Grimlocks are an ancient offshoot of humanity. They have existed in the Underdark for millennia, and are now blind having lost the used of their eyes.   The grimlocks are descended from early humans who came from Africa into the Middle East and Europe when humanity was still young. They would use the caves they found as shelter when necessary, and for religious purposes, and for burials. Eventually a few here and there made their way deeper into the Underdark, and were discovered by an ancient evil buried long ago in some of the cave systems. There, this primeval deity turned them into a cult who worshipped it, and drove them forward to attack other Underdark empires. Eventually the deity and it's army was defeated by more experienced militaries, such as the Black Elves, and the Dwarves. Whatever happed to the deity, or even it's name, is barely remembered except in hushed myths and legends across the Underdark.   Whispers are still spread around many with ties to these cultures of attacks by mutated creatures with their eyes permanently shut, with straggly black hair, and greyish skin. They are construed as having pointed ears, using primitive spiked clubs, wearing the skins & hides of their prey, and cannibal tendencies. When an attack is made, they leave behind a messy kill, carrying off unfortunates where they eat them in underground lairs strewn with the corpses remnants, blood & viscera everywhere and their own dung mixed in. When on the hunt they can blend into the rock with the skin colouring.
