Gargoyles are horrific creatures which have been ripped out of the Elemental Plane of Earth. They are regularly used to protect stone buildings, usually places of worship which keeps them under control. Only when the building comes under attack are these nasty monstrosities are let loose to terrify & harm those who would defile a religious sight. Gargoyles are called to these places by the use of a number of means. Magic is one regular method, and sometimes they are called by pious people to defend stone buildings and allowed to torment the impious in turn to bring them in line. It is the gleeful nature to harm sentient creatures that attracts gargoyles to this calling, allowing a mutual kinship between the two to spring up.
