Frankish Levy

The Franks generally relied on a levy or conscripts to fulfil many basic military dues. They make up the numbers of basic troops for the military and called upon when necessary. Most have basic training in spears, hand axes, short swords or javelins / short bows. Most were armoured with basic shields, helmets and rudimentary armour. Basic training is supplied when necessary, and they returned home, usually with their gear if they survived, and then where required to train a portion of the year so they can be called up again if need be. Their equipment must be returned when they die or reach old age.
